Owner description: A JOURNEY THROUGH KAKADU's WETLANDSYellow Water Billabong, Kakadu's most famous wetland, is located at the end of Jim Jim Creek, a tributary of the South Alligator River. The river system, which is the largest in Kakadu, contains extensive wetlands that include river channels, floodplains and backwater swamps.WILDLIFEAbout one third of Australia's bird species are represented in Kakadu National Park, with at least 60 species found in the wetlands. Whistling Ducks and Magpie Geese are the most abundant. Our guides run a competition between themselves on who can find "the big five" on one cruise - all five species of kingfisher that can be found in Kakadu. One species is only 2 cm tall. There are plenty of crocodiles in their natural habitat, and buffalo on the floodplains. A hugeJabiru's nest is nearby, and depending on the season, Brolgas can be found dancing. THE EXPERIENCEYellow Water Cruises, winner of the 2011 and 2009 NT Brolga Tourism Award for Major Tourist Attraction operates exclusively on Yellow Water Billabong. It operates year round and provides up to six cruises a day of 90 or 120 minute duration. The sunrise and sunset cruise are very popular and advance bookings are recommended. Often people undertake more than one cruise to see the changes in the wildlife at different times of the day. More should experience a cruise in different seasons. We can never guarantee what will happen on a cruise, but every time is a unique experience. OUR GUIDESAll of our experienced guides are ticketed with the Kakadu Knowledge and are often supported by our Indigenous Employment Program trainees that give fascinating insights into how the Bininj people use the flora and fauna to support their way of life. They are inducted with a 12 week training program. Some guides have been with us for over 8 years. YELLOW WATER FISHINGYellow Water Fishing provides an opportunity to catch the famous barramundi on Kakadu's most famous billabong. These tours are perfect for families or the keen angler and last for 2-3 hours depending on the time of day. Groups of up to 4 people only. Bookings essential. Yellow Water Cruises are the best way to experience the wetlands of Kakadu and it will be an experience remembered for a lifetime.

This was a great early morning cruise in the park. The scenery first thing in the morning was very atmospheric. There were lots of birds and crocodiles in the area for avid wildlife explorers.
The tour leader was very knowledgeable about the wildlife and the aboriginal history of the area.

“Highlight of our Kakadu visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 21, 2012

We took the sunrise cruise and thus viewed a wide variety of active, beautiful birdlife before it got too hot (high 30s by late morning). Also numerous crocodiles up close. Sunrise on the river is very special. Our cruise was in mid-October and thus there were many birds with young and many trees in bloom. The cruise is most enjoyable and our guide was friendly and amusing. The Yellow Waters Cruise was definitely the highlight of our visit to Kakadu and we would have been most disappointed with Kakadu had we not participated in the cruise (I will write another review regarding our impressions of Kakadu). If you enjoy birdlife and getting up close to nature, then this cruise is up your street. Make sure you take a hat and sun-screen!

Thank for writing the review on our Yellow Water Cruise!

As you mentioned, it is indeed one of the highlights in Kakadu and even whole of Australia. Sunrise on Yellow Water Billabong is truly special. Our guides say that Wetlands change at all 6 times during the day when they go cruising on Yellow Water. Each cruise during the day offers a unique experience.

Did you know Yellow Water Cruise won the Major Tour Operator "BROLGA" award at the Northern Territory Tourism Award Function. Yellow Water Cruise will also represent Northern Territory in the National Tourism Awards.

Thank you for writing a really wonderful and helpful review for other fellow travelers.

Best Regards

“Best part of our day trip”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 11, 2012

We went on a yellow waters cruise as part of our one day Kakadu trip. It was the best part of Kakadu for us. We slowly cruises the waters with a fantastic guide. He was so knowledgeable about everything, and showed us where the birds and aquatic animals were. His love of the area shone through and we felt so privileged to be able to see it. A big thank you to our Koori brothers and sisters for sharing such a special place.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review regarding our Yellow Water Cruises.

The flora and fauna is just spectacular as you described and we were pleased you found our guide enthusiastic, eagle-eyed and informative. Our guides go through a tremendous amount of training which includes Kakadu Knowledge, a course administered by Charles Darwin University. Each of our guides must also complete training with our Traditional Owners to ensure they have the cultural knowledge required.

I do hope that you can spend a couple of nights in Kakadu on your next visit as there is so much that Kakadu National Park has to offer.

Please feel free to share your pictures on Gagudju Dreaming's facebook page.

Once again thank you for your review.

Best Regards

“Crocodiles Crocodiles Crocodiles !!!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 9, 2012

Our family 2 adults and 2 kids (10 and 5 ) booked on the early morning cruise. Although it was a bit of an early morning wake up it was well worth the effort. It is very popular so make sure you book. (There were 4 boats the day we went and they were all full) Our tour guide was very helpful and obviously had a love for the area, although a little sarcastic at times which tended to become a bit of a bore by the end. The birdlife was spectacular but it was the crocs that stole the show. Our visit was at the end of the wet season when the water levels are at their lowest. The concentration of crocodiles was high and they were everywhere. We took some great photos. After the cruise we went back to Cooinda on the shuttle bus to have a buffet breakfast.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

We love receiving feedback about tours that we offer and we are continually looking at ways to improve our services.

Kakadu National Park is changing at the moment as we are fast approaching the Green Season. We are seeing some magnificent thunder storms and the lush new growth of flora throughout the park.

Wishing you a great day!

“Beautiful birdlife”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 8, 2012

Ruben was sour guide and his enthusiasm was infectious. He seems genuinely passionate about the fauna and flora of the area. Unfortunately we were with a large tour group, but they split us up into 2 boats which made it more manageable.
