Stayed at this hotel for 9 days from March 27 Thru April 5. The Staff at the hotel are great. Everything else from the rooms to the food are just ok. It would probably be a 3 Star at best.
There is no bathroom by the pool area which was a huge turn off. The beach isn't finished no trees, no chairs, no waiters. We went over to the other Riu and found the beach there to be much better. They had entertainment by the pool which was really good. There is no top shelf liquor at the resort. The drinks are watered down. For a 4 star resort you would think that the alcohol would be top shelf or at least give you an option to pay for top shelf drinks. The food was ok. Service was good. The rooms was ok. We booked a suite with an outdoor hot tub which we did not use due to the location of it on the balcony it was in direct view of everyone using the elevator. The weather was great. Hot and Sunny everyday. We booked a couple of trips with Melvin from the tour desk He was fantastic if you go I would highly recommend using him, he is very knowledgeable. He hooked us up with Carlos from Guanacaste Tours who was the nicest person I have ever encountered on a trip. I loved the country of Costa Rica But I am not a fan of this resort. I would recommend people go to Costa Rica and try to find a different resort.

We stayed here 3/30 - 4/6. Food was excellent as was the entertainment. We had kids aged 7, 10, 11 & 13 with our party of 10. It's not the best kids resort we have been too as there were some adult drinking games. Don't stay at the sister property next door with kids, it looked like MTV spring break! Overall great and I would stay again.

Spent Mar 22-31st. Had a good time. Thanks to WALTER at the pool. Great service and great drinks. Booked special table in Arenal buffet. Brought birthday favours. Photographer booked too. Had a great suprise 50th party for my brother. Cake made by resort delicious.

Rented van for 6 people and went to zip lining, hot springs and mud baths. And then went to Tamarindo beach for a day. If you like the beach surfing lifestyle, go there. Shopping is not great. Prices very inflated in $ US. ALWAYS ASK THE PRICE IN COSTA RICAN MONEY. Do the calculations yourself. Money is roughly 500 to 1. So 1000 coronas is $2 US not $10 US Got ripped off. Drinks can be $10 Each. So check prices. Lunch for 6 was $125. Go to Liberia and shop at local stores. At the airport only duty free shop worth it. VERY expensive otherwise. By renting van we spent $350 vs $1700 buying tours. That included van, gas, attraction fees and meals. There are slipperybwhen wet signs all over resort for a reason

The tiles are deadly when wet. I slipped and broke my arm.

The place shut down at midnight. No night life Tamarindo for that.

The last comment. The beach is not great. Snorkeling poor. At low tide water stagnant and fishy. And the bathroom is very far from the pool. There were a lot of people in the pool. There was nobody in the bathroom. So where did they all pee?????? You got it. In the pool! !!!!!

Great place to go if you like hiking, jungles, critters, questionable pool water and quiet nights. Zip lining, HOT HOT HOT weather, monkeys, turtles, schools of fish. Purple gray and stainless steel decor.

We've just returned from a wonderful week at this property. We found the service to be excellent, the hotel well maintained, the staff engaging and attentive and the location serene. The "animation" staff were fantastic with the children and adults, always enticing you to get involved and putting on a surpisingly high quality evening program (not close to as cheesy as most all inclusives!). The food was very good, especially so at the buffet. A special huge shout out to Gina, who provided fantastic service at every meal, as well as patient Spanish lessons.

We will be back! A relaxing stay; very good value for the money.

Room Tip: Face the ocean and enjoy the view. Face the forest and enjoy the wildlife. Can't lose.

Here's the scoop....

Rooms: The rooms looked like the RIU was trying to create an upscale "Vegas" vibe. Our room was kept clean during our stay, I only had to leave a note one day for more water, soda, and wash cloths. After that things went smoothly.

Food: The food was pretty standard all-inclusive fare. We ate at all the specialty restaurants and buffet. One new pleasant surprise was that besides the buffet there is an Italian restaurant that does not require reservations, which had fantastic food! Also, the almost daily pool barbecues served great food.

Beach: I had read other reviews saying the beach was very hot and honestly I thought people were exaggerating. They were not exaggerating, the black sand is crazy hot during the day and only a handful of die hards appeared to be using the beach during the day. I did walk along the beach every morning, before 9, and then it was perfect temperature to walk on. The beach is beautiful, it's just very hot, even with sandals on. Just be aware if you're looking for a beach get-away this may not be the best place to stay.

Pools: There are five pools; swim up, two more "active" pools, pool with volleyball net, and the upper "quieter" pool. We never had a problem finding chairs and they have canvas shades that can be opened or closed depending on if you want sun or not.

Service: Costa Ricans are so friendly! This shows in the staff at the RIU, always smiling, saying hello, etc. There is one waitress from the lobby bar, Rocio, who was so great during our stay. She knew what drinks we wanted by our second night there and was just such a nice person. The entertainment team was also great. They work very hard to help you enjoy your stay at both the pool during the day and again at the nightly shows.

Tip: Pay your airport exit tax at the hotel before you leave, it relieves some of the stress of airport madness when your vacation is over.

All in all, this is a nice resort. Just bear in mind if you're looking for a beach get-away, this may not be the best choice.
