Gina Mora was our usual waitress at Arenal Restaurant - nicest server in the hotel! very polite and attentative.

Food was good at Arenal - my sisters and I usually had dinner there. The Steakhouse wasnt too bad either. Lunch and Papagayo couldve been better - servers there were a little lazier than the ones at Arenal.

Hotel was nice. Wish there were more towel/blanket origami like I'm used to at other Riu Resorts.

Entertainment was fun. never a dull show when we did catch it.

Loved the unlimited champagne hehehe that's all I drank while on vacation.

Massages on the beach with Hania were wonderful. Spa #1 just make sure you arent totally shy when you remove your tops, ladies! Open area, but Hania makes sure you are covered and comfortable.

Since it was just us three girls, we felt safer booking excursions through the resort. Melvin was very helpful. He hooked us up with "Crazy Alex" on a private tour to the Llanos de Cortez Waterfalls. He was fun and cooky and took awesome pics for us at ths waterfalls..definately my favorite day during our whole stay.

Thoroughly enjoyed our week at the Riu palace. Drive from airport and check in all went well. We were there for Christmas Eve and they put on an incredible spread. All a la cartes were closed, so extra tables were set on the lawn in red and white with an additional food station on the lawn. Lobster, schrimp, steak and tenderloin on the grill, as well as all the other standards. Very well done.

PROS
Rooms - were kept very clean and yes a tub in the middle of the room is a bit strange, but it works. Our 3 kids were in a room with double beds, and their room had a curtain to pull to block the tub. Beds are a bit hard, but not uncomfortable. No problem will refills in the mini bar

Pool and beach - you don't have to do the early morning dash to get a chair. Never had a problem, and although the chairs are stacked away from the beach, they will pull up as many chairs as you need. We are beach people and loved it and the water. Enjoyed bar service on the beach.

Food - 2 of our party in the culinary field, and we all preferred the buffet. Great variety, well seasoned, and great ceviche bar. Went to steakhouse and Japanese, and they were okay. Steak was well cooked medium/rare and rare as requested, but AA at best.

Excursions - booked surfing and super combo with Alex on the Beach. Actually booked the surfing in Tamarindo from their website before we arrived. Prices, service and guides were great. Prefer excursions as small group versus a big bus. Totally geared the excursion to what we wanted. Of note, the water slide was sketchy, but was the most talked about when we got back. Also went to coco beach for souvenir shopping.

Wifi - nice to have it, but don't try to connect between 4 and 7 pm. Actually got better reception at the beach!

CONS
No night life - 3 20year olds with us, and although they made friends, bar closes at midnight. Riu guanaste has a sports bar which offers something to do, but the place really closes down at night.

Noise in hallways - depending on where your room is, the hallways REALLY echo. Woken many mornings at 6 am with carts going down the hallways.

Lack of bathrooms - really could use more bathrooms near buffet, pools and beach. It's a hike!

Loved how safe we felt in Costa Rica. Lots to do, and would definitely go back to Costa Rica, but would protably rent a place in Tamarindo next time. But Riu Palace gave us a great intro to the country.

Room Tip: The further away you are from the lobby the quieter the rooms, since you won't hear the traffic...

My husband an I traveled to RIU Palace for our honeymoon in September. Although it was the rainy season it only rained for parts of three days. We really enjoyed the Japanese restaurant and had no trouble getting to the restaurants as it was the low season. We were with many other honeymooners and came home with some new friends. We took a walk across some rocks on the beach to the white sand beach in the other cove an found monkeys in the trees. While we enjoyed the all inclusiveness our next trip to Costa Rica will be a bit more adventurous with more than 3 day trips.

Our expectations were definitely met at the Riu Palace CR on a family trip for 17 people. The service levels were above average and great selection of outings were readily available. As for food, all restaurants were very good, we thought breakfast and the Italian Restaurant were the best. The countryside of Costa Rica quite accessible; much more so the Mexico or Dom Republic. For instance, Yari at Swiss Travel very helpful in arranging Christmas Eve Mass at 9 pm - found Mass choices for us and arranged transportation - top notch - and booking Mega Combo and Palo Verde National Park. Entertainment levels were higher than other Riu's visits.

Room Tip: Room access in short hallway off main hallway; great for 2 families/traveling in a group. Noise not...

My husband and myself just came back from the RIU on Christmas eve. I have to say, it was an amazing resort! The rooms were great. Yes, the beds may be a bit on the hard side but other then that the room was perfect! The Lobby area was nice, very modern. A wonderful lounge area where we had tea everyday and a terrific bar with live music every night! Bartenders were great, very friendly and fun. The grounds were nice and will be better once all the foliage starts to grow(resort opened last year!) ALL the pools, and there were many, were great....unlike some resorts, you never have to worry about finding a lounge chair, there are plenty....Pool bars opened at 10am and the waiters were out all day, around the pool and beach to take drink orders!!!! Drinks at the pool bar were somewhat weak so we just asked for double the alcohol,no problem. Fyi,try a Dirty Monkey, best drink! By far, the BEST food we have ever had at any resort we've been too!! Buffet was amazing! And the 2 restaurants we ate at were great! OUr favorite was the Italiane Restaruant. Alex on the Beach excursions were great also...we booked through Keneth at the beach. Very guy and the prices were decent. A must to do is the massages on the beach! $30 for 1 hr! Amazing! The only cons about this resort: there definately needs to be a bathroom closer to the pool area. Also, not a con, but a place for hammocks would be lovely! Would for sure recommend this resort! Oh, and I read about misquitto's but there were none when we were there.
