We booked a bungalow with bathroom on the recommendation of trip advisor customer. Because we were visiting during the tea festival the price had risen from 300 to 800 . We were shown to something resembling my allotment shed with two mattresses on top of each other on the floor and a single bed, yes there was a bathroom. Not happy with what we were shown we had little choice but to stay because it was a long way back down the mountain road. We went to get something to eat and our return had no light in the room, a man came to try to fix it, what a fiasco! We were then given emergency lighting which should give us 6 hours, It went off after 10 minutes. The only light was in the bathroom and the glow of the TV. On closer inspection the next morning we were disturbed to see how grubby the place was with even a hole in the wooden floor. The grounds were messy and very smelly. We still had to pay the 800 but at least the toilet had been clean! definitely not on our list of places to stay.

Very simple and very cheap. The proprietor speaks great English. When we arrived he showed us a simple room with a shared bathroom for 100Baht per night. We opted, however, for the private bungalow for 300Baht per night with a private bathroom and a picnic table outside which we used for late-night drinks and conversation. We chose the bungalow mostly because the shared bathroom in the cheaper room was a squat toilet and we would have had to walk through the courtyard outside at night to get to it. The room was very simple: 2 double beds, a TV (we didn't try to see if it worked or not) and a small rack for clothes. Sheets were clean with thick blankets. There is a restaurant at the guesthouse although we didn't try the food so I can't comment. All in all it was perfect for budget travelers spending the night there, and the owner was very helpful in advising us how to get around the town and what to see. I would recommend for simple travelers.

Room Tip: Opt for the bungalow - it's 200Baht more per night but the private bathroom makes it worth it.

Great location in the town center. Bungalows are a good size and clean, although a little worn. They're still comfortable and the price can't be beat. We spent two nights here. It's very easy to access the nearby villages and there are plenty of places to eat within walking distance, although it's best if you have a scooter or motorcycles.

Rooms were OK. A bit dirty and unkept, but not so bad we got heebie jeebies. Guys who run it are super nice and speak great english. Location is perfect. Not much to complain about. If you are in Mae Salong, you HAVE to eat at the Chinese Noodle House. It will change your life. I honestly think I would make the trip there just to eat those noodles again.

My partner and I stayed in one of the bungalows for 300B per night, which was great value.

The bungalow was clean and had 2 big double beds with thick covers (the nights can get cold). The hot water was a little temperamental but for travelers on a budget it had everything we needed and was quite comfortable. Our bungalow had some unusual paintings on the wall but that just added to the charm.

The guesthouse is situated in a good area of the town within walking distance of markets and restaurants. It also has clothes washing facilities and wi-fi. The staff were very nice and helped us organise our travel arrangements to get to Chiang Mai when we left.

I'd recommend Mae Salong and Shin Sane, it is a great part of the world and surprisingly one of the cheapest places we stayed at in Thailand.

Either things have gone downhill since the last two reviews were written or I stayed in a different shin sane guesthouse in mae salong.... on the plus side the rooms were cleanish and the owner was very nice, but we were pretty disappointed by this guesthouse - very basic rooms, hard beds, slightly decrepid bathroom with shower with throw a 6 to start hot water - all in all not great. the price is pretty cheap (300bahts) but we have stayed in much more comfortable places for this price.
