Our family group of 7 had lunch at Te Awa Farm Winery Restaurant. Some of our meals were terrific; others of us had mediocre meals. Service was quite slow. It was great, though that they had a children's menu. And lovely wines!

Good food, great ambience: midwinter with a central fire and good friends - loved it

Well, you can fall on your feet sometimes. After an 'Art deco' morning in Napier, we set off to sample some wines with no particular plan in mind. The young woman at the tasting counter served us wines to suit our palates, explaining their characteristics. Being from an overseas wine growing region, we're a bit choosy but the wines were excellent. However, she then went the extra mile to help us map out other wineries to visit via a route to easily head us back where we needed. We were so impressed, we stayed for lunch. Lunch was superb, a very pleasant surprise with a beautiful outlook over the vineyards - great food, excellent service.

We didn't have much time to tour wineries while in Hawke's Bay but we did visit Te Awa.

Really enjoyed the wine-tasting and the two bottles we bought for drinking later! They do a great Rose which is only sold at their cellar door.

Te Awa is a really handsome winery with its long, tree-lined driveway.

We didn't eat there (we visited in the morning) but we have heard that the food at Te Awa is excellent. If the food is as good as the wine then we missed out on a great meal.

We arrived fairly hot, sweaty and hungry on bikes. The gentleman (and the dog!) welcomed us warmly, got us some water and let us decide whether to eat or taste first (decision, eat, with a glass of wine). The mixed platter of cheeses and charcuterie was just fantastic, plenty for two very hungry cyclists! The fig chutney was so yummy we hunted it down and bought some the next day!. The tasting was interesting, particularly so as once my BF announced that all the 'blackberry this, apricot and straw that' made no sense to him, the sommelier (or whatever they are called in wineries) immediately switched modes and started talking to BF in 'chemistry' language which was a much better approach that he really appreciated. The guy knew his stuff and we were very happy to buy from him on that basis.
