“Friendly Motel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 26, 2012

Well run family run motel. Lovely big rooms with all amenities including a great in-room spa. Ross and Sandra were very helpful. We asked for an upstairs room away from the busy road and this proved to be a good move as the traffic is quite noisey. Central and within walking distance to Hastings shops and restaurants. Would definitley stay here again.

Room Tip: Upstairs room away from road are quieter.

It is close to the hospital, on a main road and convenient to the shopping centre. The spa rooms are huge and comfortable. The hosts are helpful and very pleasant.

We had a wonderful stay in Hastings all made possible by our hosts Ross and Sandra, very helpful and their kindness shown to us was amazing. Our stay was very very enjoyable everything was clean and comfy, a place to stay that is central to everything, shops, restaurants, hospital and most importantly sightseeing...........we will return!
Highly Recommended and a credit to you both!

We have stayed twice at this hotel. The first visit was uneventful and owners were very friendly & helpful. Unfortunately on 2nd visit we were once again on ground floor of this 2 storey hotel. The first night the people in the room above us decided to turn the spa on at about 2am after they arrived back from a night out and started yelling as well. The spa noise is quite loud. The next night the same room had different people but sounded like a heard of elephants.
So if you choose to stay here we suggest 2nd floor but you will have to carry your bags up the stairs - no lift.

Clean, Spacious and very well maintained.

We have now stayed here twice, the second time we took another couple with us.

We booked again as we liked the huge spa baths that are right in the lounge room instead of being tucked away in a bathroom, so you could turn the TV around and watch it.

The owners were very helpful in suggesting places to eat but unfortunately we arrived late and by the time we got out we had to settle for Burger King Yuk! don't go there. This was at least in walking distance as is a bottle store.

The first time we stayed we had an upstairs unit in the middle of the block that was huge and we really didn't notice any traffic noise even tho it is on a busy intersection, it was winter time then tho' and we did have a bit of trouble working out how to turn the heater off which we found noisy.

On our second trip we had an outside unit and the traffic was noticeable although make sure you check the windows as they are those aluminum ones that have the ability to be left open by a fraction and therefore allowing the noise to filter through, wasn't so bad on the second night when we shut them tight.

The owners were also very helpful in making suggestions of which wineries to visit, these are all reasonably close so why bother staying in Napier where the Motels are all so much dearer.

Vidal is a reasonable taxi ride and the food was fantastic.

I recommend if you are visiting the wineries to drive straight to the cape there's a great place there for breakfast, then work your way back starting at Kim Crawford.

  • Liked — Huge Spa
  • Disliked — A bit Noisy but we are not used to traffic noise where we live

Hastings is a functional though attractive town in the shadow of it's more well known neighbor Napier, the "art deco capital of New Zealand." They both share the temperate climate of the North Island's East Coast and proximity to the Hawke's Bay wineries. A very small but comfortable motel on the edge of the central business district is the Cumberland Court. Each room is like a studio apartment with kitchenettes and lots of space. Wireless internet access is provided at a reasonable rate (for New Zealand) and there is a full service health club including a 25 meter lap pool on the other side of the parking lot to which the motel provides complimentary access. Most importantly, the service is outstanding! There are no restaurant facilities on the property, but either a "continental" or "full" breakfast can be ordered as "room service" for an extra fee. On the weekend we stayed at Cumberland, these breakfasts were personally prepared by the receptionist/manager on duty, who was a delightful, chatty lady who comes across as an all-caring grandmother. There are several modest but quite decent restaurants within walking distance of the property.

The only disadvantage to the Cumberland Court is it's awkward location on the corner of a very busy, commercial intersection/circle. There is only one approach to the driveway from one direction, so chances are good one must make a couple of attempts to get on to the property. This busy intersection also results in some noise, especially for the front units which might make it difficult for light sleepers.

All in all the Cumberland Court is excellent value especially at NZ$ 145 including breakfast for two and access to the health club around the corner.
