Great location looking up to Te Mata Peak. Wine tasting consultant was very knowledgeable, We love coming here when we visit the area, and always buy wine.
The menu may be a little too expensive for some ( and us), so wine it is !!!

A fabulous location near the bottom of Craggy Range. A beautiful setting and wonderful architecture. The tasting room was first class and the tasting was professional and friendly. We tasted 3 whites, a rose and 3 reds. All were excellent. We were told who the stockists were in our different home countries so can now buy to drink or lay down for future enjoyment. We learned a huge amount about wine making, the areas, the weather, the vines and the soils and stones that all contribute to the overall taste of the wines. A very enjoyable hour or so.

We have visited Craggy range for tasting and dining on family visits to New Zealand over the past 10 years. The setting is fabulous, the dining has been and remains of a very high standard, food and service. The wines are good - at their best among the top in New Zealand. However in recent years there is a real shift in the wine tasting experience towards the corporate business model. Fair enough if it gives value. As recently as 2017 we were served by an experienced and empathetic employee, giving us good pours of the top wines and discussing them with us in a professional way. Our experience this year was completely different. There is a choice of tastings, and as wine lovers we decided on the prestige tasting which offered five of the best Craggy Range wines available, including Le Sol and Sophia of which I have several previous vintages. The wines are good, no doubt. However I have two serious issues. First the tasting poured is very small, not really enough to make an informed judgement. Second, when we got to Le Sol we were told there was none open! We were offered an inferior substitute. After "discussion" with the manager he agreed to open a bottle. And by the way, this wine was available by the glass in the restaurant. We were well looked after by a very nice person, but who was young, inexperienced and reciting from a prepared script. Sorry, but for $50 (yes 50) it needs to be better - proper pours, wines as listed, experienced staff. If you compare with equivalent quality competition Craggy Range is way off on value. Finally, if you are tempted to buy bottles, check first the price in your country. An example is Le Sol, $150 cellar door. UK retail equivalent NZ$88!
We enjoy the experience at Craggy Range and will no doubt dine there again in future years. But please sort out the tasting experience.

Thank you for your feedback.
At Craggy Range we are striving to create ‘New World Classics’ and have all facets of our business perform at a World Class level. To ensure we continue to do so we have undertaken a development/renovation programme which saw us redevelop the cellar door, restaurant & build additional accommodation units giving us a total of three Lodges & six Cottages on site. The development was not confined to our hosting facilities with the acquisition of an additional 200 hectares of land in Martinborough which will allow us to match the growth we are seeing in all our markets.

At Craggy Range we take our ‘host responsibility’ very seriously with regards to the ‘The Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012’ which aims to minimise harm from alcohol by managing the way it's sold, supplied and consumed. To that effect we have food available at all times and water is served alongside the wines where we look to pour 30-50 mls of wine per tasting. Over the course of the Prestige tasting potentially up to 10 wines can be served; Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, 2 Chardonnays, Rose, 2 Pinot Noirs & 2 Red blends (& Syrah if available) which is the equivalent of 3 full glasses of wine.

We don’t compromise on the quality of our wines and to that effect will only release wines in our Prestige Collection if we deem them to be of high enough quality. Sadly, this was not the case in 2017 which meant that no Sophia nor Le Sol were released. As these wines have garnered a following of the last 20 years (being included in the inaugural Fine Wine Classification in 2016) we choose to limit what we taste in the cellar door to ensure that these wines are always available to be purchased and can still be enjoyed at the home of Craggy Range with our wonderful food served in the restaurant.

With the vine material now reaching 20 years & the quality of the Prestige wines performing to a high level we have felt comfortable lifting the price gradually over the last few releases. Sadly, these changes take longer to come into effect in our overseas markets and as you mentioned, provide wonderful value for money when they can be sourced in your local market.

Thank you again for your feedback, we certainly take all comments on board and look to make improvements to provide a better service. Of course, we would be delighted for you to join us another time and have one of our senior staff members provide a tasting for you.

Kind Regards,
The Team at Craggy Range

'Oh sorry guys - we've closed tastings an hour before advertised because of a private function'. How to make people feel small and not wanted - especially hard when we are New Zealanders!

Thanks for the feedback on your recent experience with our cellar door.

The cellar door, restaurant & accommodation are extremely busy this time of year and on the odd occasion when we have large bookings are required to close early to ensure a high quality experience for our guests.

We try to minimise this as much as possible and always encourage making a booking to make sure you don’t miss out.

We called in on a busy summer Saturday and had a wine tasting with Bridget who was passionate about Craggy Range and the wines and talked us through each wine in detail but without ever getting too technical or boring...perfectly pitched!
Heading back to Ireland the next day so unfortunately couldn't take any of the great wines with us....
