Located next to the historic Duke of Marlborough Inn, this modern hotel is a gem. Most of the rooms border the lovely pool area and deck. Tables, chairs, umbrellas and lounges for each room in a little alcove in front of the big sliding glass doors for entry into each room’s sitting area. There are two love seats, table and 4 chairs, a full kitchenette in that sitting area. The bedroom has a roomy queen sized bed with a nice firm mattress. The comforter is light but quite warm. The bathroom could use a little more storage space but is adequate. Water pressure in the shower is excellent and the water is quite hot. By the way, that is contrary to the pool but locals don’t seem to mind the pool temperature. There is a spa as well as a hot tub. Located in the heart of Russell there are lots of places to eat all around it. The front entrance faces the beach and there are kayaks, bikes, etc. all for the guests to use. Wi-fi is available, but we were surprised to learn upon check out that there was a $5.00 NZD daily charge for its use. When we booked nearly one year ago there was no charge and although management has changed and the room rate was increased by $5.00 NZD per day, the current management honored our reservation price but got the $5.00 NZD back with the Wi-fi charge. One major criticism was that there were not any blackout shades or curtains and room was very bright in the morning. On the other hand, unlike almost every hotel room we have stayed in we had enough light at night to read by.

Room Tip: We liked room 11. The poolside rooms are all very nice.

What to say.... this place is just another lovely lodge, perfect location, perfect people, rooms are nice and clean, and price is reasonable... You have a nice BBQ that you can share with other people and a tiny pool that is very clean

These guys really deserve their high ranking. This is a beautiful spot in a stunning seaside town and this motel simply delivers everything you need. As a family of 4 with kids 10 & 8 it couldn’t have been better. Good value for money and the kids sure took advantage of the pool, spa, bikes and kayaks. Owners were wonderfully helpful without being obtrusive and (with the exception of kids in the pool during the day) it was very quiet. Best accom we had on our trip right around Northland – We will be back!

Room Tip: We were in 6 which was great, but they all looked great. All seemed to face the pool except a couple...

Commodore's Lodge was a great place to stay in Russell. It was right at the centre of the township, had all the facilities you might need: wifi internet, outdoor pool, spa pool, bikes/helmets, kayaks. The owners were unfailingly helpful. Our room opened onto the pool area, so the only noise was from fellow travellers rather than the waterfront crowd. Minor quibble would be the cramped car parking facilities. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Rooms around the pool don't get the waterfront crowd noise, but obviously if your neighbours are...

I'm writing this review sitting in apartment 12, overlooking the pool area. Fantastic apartment with all the facilities I could ask for.

Although Russell is hardly a sprawling metropolis, the Commodore's is centrally located, and just a few minutes walk from everything.

Plenty of places nearby to grab a meal, ranging from cheap takeaway, to special occasion treats. There are also 2 minimarts if you want to self cater in the well equipped kitchenette.

As another reviewer has already said, having an apartment by the pool can have its drawbacks. This is a family holiday location, and quite often the pool is occupied by kids playing. Personally, they didn't bother me too much.

Overall, no complaints. I'd happily stay here again.

We stayed at Commodore's Lodge between Christmas and New Year. The hotel is in a great location and the owners are very helpful, but if you want somewhere quiet to go this may not be a place for you. When we were there we were in one of the rooms overlooking the central pool and the children from one of two of the neighbouring families spent all day in the pool. This was inevitably a bit noisy - not helped by the fact that they were playing ball games most of the time. The pool area isn't really bit enough for this.
