Commodore's Lodge

We have just spent 3 nights in Russell at the Commodore Lodge. Our booking advised no views and recent rennovations of the room (2 bedroom). However it was only 15 steps to the front of Russell - so it didnt' matter. Jill and Russell (mgs) were fabulous and very informative. We can't fault this facility - enojoyed our stay immensely. Our neighbour at the top let their son Pete (old cat) come and visit on the first night - fab - and we used the canoes and skiff's on our final morning for a paddle in the harbour. If anyone is looking for an easy stay within stones throw from the ferry terminal, boats and the water front (not to mention the BBQ, Spa and pool), then this is the place we recommend. The beds were comfortable with extra pillows and it was quiet.

Wasn't blown away by this as we perhaps expected having read the reviews but this side of the bay is certainly the side to stay on compared to Pahaia - you can catch a ferry between the two in the evening if you like and the car ferry getting here was fun. Russell is really pretty and nice to walk around in the evening and the hotel fits in well. Apart from that nothing much more to stay - a good choice right in the centre but wouldnt stay more than a night.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at commodores. We had a 1 bedroom poolside room. We had our baby with us and they provided a portacot for us. The room was well appointed, fresh and very clean. The linen and towels were a lovely quality. The staff friendly (the desk wasn't usually manned though but you didn't have to wait long after ringing the bell). It was very quiet, it was off season but as we were there for a wedding I think it was almost booked out but we could not hear any outside noise in our room. If we were there in the summer I would have used the pool, it looked very inviting and as the buildings surrounding it was very sheltered from any wind. Also if you had children and a poolside room you would be able to watch them from your room. I don't think you could get a more central location. Probably the best motel I have stayed at in this price range in NZ (was off season price). Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Poolside rooms are sheltered from any wind

We stayed here for 2 nights. The guide book that recommended staying in Russell rather than Paiha was definitely right. Russell is a lovely place wih lots of interesting things to see and the location of Commodore Lodge, right on the sea front is excellent. We had a ground floor sea veiw room which had everything that you could want and to sit on the verandah watching the sunset was amazing.

We lobbed into Russell looking for somewhere quiet and boy we found it in Russell which was exactly what we wanted. We have stayed at Pihiera but russell was more quiet and not as commercial. The Lodge is located roughly 20 steps from the wharf and right next door to the cafe was has the best cheese burger I have eaten in a long time. The rooms were great with large bed and 4 seated table with a full kitchen and all you needed to cook your own food. We didnt bother for there are many great places to eat all within walking distance. We were dissappointed that the room doesn't have airconditioning and only a pedistal fan to keep the air moving. Even a ceiling fan would have been good. Any way the rooms, we had room 2, was great and there is a pool and spa but we didn't use them. They do have kayaks which anyone can use as well as bikes which were great. The rooms also had a outdoor setting which we used a lot. The cafe nextdoor allowed us to take our yummy cheeseburgers back to the room, We also went out fishing and caught some great snapper (thaks Tinny Terry) and we bought the fillets back and the cafe next door cooked them for us and we ate in the cafe and washed them down with the local brew. Next to the cafe is a booking centre and you can book whatever you want. There are a few different ferry services that go to and from Pihiera as to the hole in the rock cruises. The beaches are the typical pebbles, no sand so take your old shoes if you intend to walk along the beach. At night, there is plenty of fish and calamari swimming around. In town there are plenty of fish and chip stores, ice cream palours and alike. The pictures/ cimena is on at the Local hall and the usual supermarket is fairly cheap and has all you need. We wished we stayed there for longer than 2 nights but maybe next time. The sunsets are great and the sounds of the beach is something you never get sick of. I hope you enjoy Russell as much as we did.

We just completed a 3 week journey throughout NZ and must say this little gem of a lodge was indeed a highlight of our trip. We had one of the 2 front rooms facing the water and thoroughly enjoyed the large patio area with its amazing view. This was a true studio having a large kitchen area, a sitting area, and of course the sleeping area. The only negative would be the lack of A/C as it was quite warm during our stay and the fan provided little relief. Although we opened the window, it was necessary to draw the drapery closed in the evening as the entire front was open to the street . In spite of this, it was a marvelous place to stay.
