Sally's is one of the cafe/restaurants at the waterfront in Russell, while it might not look as much fine dining like its neighbour, it is worthwhile checking out. Quite frankly, it is one of the best value for money in town.

Sally's is run by its owner as the name suggest and you have the family atmosphere that makes you feel welcome as if you have always been part of the family, regardless of whether you are a day tourist, have been there several times or a local.

The food is very good and the serves very generous. We had the mussels and the fish and chips - mouthwatering!

We popped off to Sally's for a bit of fish and chips. The restaurant was like everything else in the Bay of Islands - Charming! Sally was so sweet and the food was sooo good!!!! with hardy helpings. They're not too fond of tomato sauce on chips there though. Oh well, when in Rome...Both my wife and I filled up on $32 NZD, including a beer. Outside seating was just across from the bay. Great ambiance. Definitely recommend the fish and chips.

Friendly staff, good food with reasonable prices, varied menu, muzak genuinely background so it did not intrude, prompt service, and a fantastic view of the bay as Sally's is on the waterfront: I recommend Sally's.

Only slight negative comment is that one dessert we ordered was ice-cream described as with fruit and cream - but the fruit turned out to be one grape cut in half. Perhaps the server had not read the description on the menu. Also the ice cream was really frozen hard as though it had not been freshly scooped but had been scooped into balls and then frozen. But the desserts were all a good size, as were the mains.

We had lunch on a Monday. Windy, but OK to eat outside as not cold. Great view over the Russell harbour. I ordered the seafood chowder and my wife had the steamed mussels. It was great that they said she could have a half portion (5 mussels) as she's not a big eater. Both came with some toasted rye bread.

I was disappointed with the chowder, although the taste was very good, it didn't have much seafood in it and was quite thin. Our benchmark is the chowder from Umu in Coromandel - excellent. The mussels were good, and the broth with them was spicy Thai, also very good. Well presented with a bowl for shells and a bowl of warm water for washing fingers.

After we finished we waited for our coffees. And waited, and waited. So I went inside and after a bit of looking round they decided they had forgotten about them. When they came they were very good (Allpress), but we only got a brief apology. It's not as if they were busy either.

They can do better I'm sure.
