“A must do during your stay in the Bay of Islands!”

Kingfisher Yacht Charters
Reviewed May 6, 2014

This is a fabulous day out with the very capable Skipper Stephen Western, a native kiwi with great knowledge of the surrounding area and waters. It is a unique way to explore the Bay of Islands, and there is no equivalent to seeing it from the water. We were also very lucky to accompany Steve on the day of the Tall Ships and Yacht Regatta in January 2014 and it is an experience that I will forever remember.

This is a quality charter, Steve is also a great photographer and has a great knowledge of a wide array of little beauty spots so you can capture some fantastic scenes on camera. On one of the days we went out with him we were lucky enough to see dolphins and orcas, a wonderful sight in their beautiful natural habitat and highlights how fake and tacky the likes of Seaworld etc all are.

The great thing about his charters is the relaxed quality that is evident throughout - he only takes small numbers, the lunch platter is absolutely beautiful (Sue's homemade muffins are to die for), and he is flexible with times if you are - it is primarily about you having an enjoyable and memorable experience. Steve is a fine Captain and sailor, responsible, safe and has a gentle authoritative manner - the kind of qualities that are worth any money when you are going out to sea.

In addition - if your holiday snaps are too amateur to get put onto canvas to display in your home - he has a wonderful selection of fabulous photographs (nautical and otherwise) which you can acquire for a worthwhile number of dollars, made all the more special because you have some knowledge of the man who took them.

All in all - a truly memorable experience in a beautiful part of the world. (Thanks Steve)

Excellent days sailing trip, not to be missed!! Great value for money! Our skipper Steve was really friendly and very knowledgable about NZ and the Bay of Islands! We were welcomed with lots of fantastic food, drink and company! The homemade blueberry muffins were a excellent addition to morning tea and the lunch was just as tasty with lots of fine bread, cheese, hummus, salads and much more goodies! We were able to get involved in sailing the boat and had great fun trying to learn some sailing techniques. Family run business that we would recommend to anyone planning to sail from Russell.

Warmly greeted at the dock, my family and I set off on a day of sailing and exploring with Capt Steven Western. A NZ native and longtime sailor, Steve's experience in sailing and moreover, his knowledge of his surroundings and the islands made for a wonderful day on the water. As we set sail for the day, Steve explained the basics of sailing and promised us that he would let us set the agenda for the day. True to this, we set out to explore the Bay of Islands. Treated to amazing home baked blueberry muffins made by Steve's wife for morning tea, we were grateful for this amazing treat as we soon realized that we would require this energy boost. Shortly after devouring these goodies, we embarked upon a hike to an island peak where we were awestruck by the spectacular vistas. Lucky for us, Steve is also a professional photographer and he took some fab family shots and brought us to all the best camera spots to be had. After this hike, we set sail again for a cove where we anchored for a yummy lunch provided by Steve. We returned to the dock with all of our senses sated. A wonderful day asea!

We went sailing for the day on the Kingfisher Yacht in December 2013. Just a small group of 5. Steve was not only a gracious host for the day, but a Captain that was all about your safety! Thanks to his wife, we had delicious blueberry muffins and tea/coffee for a midday treat. Then for lunch, in a peaceful cove, Steve laid out a spread of homemade breads and many other items. Yummy!
Thanks Steve for a wonderful day!!!

There are several yachts sailing out of Russel, and I can't make any comparisons, but we went out on Kingfisher with Steve and had a wonderful day.

Probably biased because I used to sail a bit and I ended up with a lot of time on the helm in a decent breeze, which was loads of fun.

Steve made us all feel very safe, and was obviously capable of sailing Kingfisher single handed if nobody wanted to join in.

Sue laid on a wonderful lunch, and special morning muffins.

We stopped for lunch in a sheltered bay and had the chance to swim, snorkel, and kayak.

We have previously done the Cream Trip (which is a must do) but going out for the day on a sailing yacht is a whole different experience. No engine noise, no windows in the way, just open air and wonderful views.

Oh, and Steve is also a professional photographer - he even lent a lens to a fellow passenger just to show what it would do on her camera.

Thoroughly recommended.
