Where to start? We had seen much of New Zealand on previous trips but never been to the Bay of Islands or Russell. Ounuwhao Harding House and our hosts Marilyn and Lee beat our already high expectations hands down: the house is beautiful, spotless in every respect, surrounded by lovely gardens and feels very welcoming. The breakfasts prepared by Marilyn are simply incredible!

We stayed in the garden suite which is spacious, gives lovely privacy but allows access to all the amenities of the main house, including the honesty bar. Sitting on the veranda and just slowing down into a holiday rhythm with a book and a glass of wine is heaven.

It is an easy 10-15 minute walk to Russell's harbour front, with access to the frequent Paihia passenger ferry, good restaurants, cafés and shops (including 2 supermarkets and a post office).

A wide range of trips and activities in the Bay (including sailing, dolphin and whale watching, fishing) as well as land-based tours on the peninsula and all parts of Northland can be booked with departure from Russell or Paihia: Kauri forests, 90 Mile Beach, Cape Reinga, the Waitangi Treaty Grounds are many more delights are all easily accessible. Marilyn and Lee are knowledgeable and will help you with planning your trips.

Lovely walks, short or longer, can be started right from the doorstep. Our explorations led us e.g. through beautiful landscapes to a winery (a tip from Marilyn), lovely tranquil Long Beach (a very short stroll) and flagstaff hill, on the north side of Russell.

At the end of every day we came back happy and the best was still ahead: the joy of being home away from home and looking forward to a comfortable bed, and waking up to the prospect of Marilyn's breakfast treats and another day in paradise!

We stayed at Marilyn's beginning of january for a couple of nights. Her house has a unique history, and all the decoration pieces are beautiful and carefully picked. Breakfast is delicious, all homecooked, even the bread. It is definitely a B&B like no other in NZ. We could see that the hosts are working very hard to make their guests' stay excellent. A must if you are in Russel, which is a charming town to spend a couple of days to discover bay of islands.

My wife and I stopped at OHH in Russell for three nights as part of our NZ trip. We were greeted by Marilyn and Lee and provided with home made cake and hot drinks after our long car journey. We were treated to three very individual and thoughtfully prepared breakfasts at a big happy kitchen table, where we sat with other guests and Marilyn in the Kitchen making sure we were well fed!
The property was like nothing we had every stayed in before and was unique, if you go to Russell, we can highly recommend you stop here.

Marilyn and Lee made us most welcome in their beautiful home. They provide well for their guests, peaceful pretty gardens, a pleasant guest lounge and comfortable bedrooms.
The breakfast is plentiful and stokes you up for the day. Eating at the same table as other guests feels more like a house party than a guest house which is a welcome change.
The only slight disadvantage for us is that we felt cold, but as we had recently come from a much warmer climate we may not have adjusted. If you feel the cold take some warm clothes but don't let that put you off - it's lovely

First time in Russell and extremely happy with the accommodation at Ounuwhao Harding House, and will certainly be returning. Amazed at the level of service and the friendliness of Marilyn and Lee. Marilyn's breakfast will not disappoint anyone, and will not leave you hungry. The house is incredible and the history behind it is great to take in, also the story around how the house was moved to it's current site is really something. Would highly recommend to all looking for a really lovely place to get away and relax, plus nice and close to Russell town center - just around the corner.

Just got back from a long weekend in Russell staying at Ounuwhao and feeling so relaxed and refreshed. We stayed in the cottage which was like a home from home with everything you could possibly need. When Marilyn showed us round I just fell in love with the place ... definately my kind of house. Fresh flowers from the garden in every room and a lovely welcome message on the chalkboard as we walked in ... a bottle of wine in the fridge, some home baking just for us and an invitation to help ourself to fruit from the trees in the garden. Going on holiday with children you are sometimes worried about how child friendly a place will be but we had no worries here .. Marilyn has thought of everything ... toys and books in the lounge and cuddly toys in the bedroom. Mr 4 didn't want to leave and he is not easily pleased so thank you for everything we hope to be back again.

Room Tip: All rooms were lovely with nice outlooks

I was invited to attend a corporate mid winter celebration at the Ounuwhao Harding House. What a delight this place is. In every luxurious room are patchwork quilts and decorations galore. Marilyn is the most hospitable hostess and her home made cooking is amazing. The gardens and surroundings are stunning. I thoroughly recommend this bed and breakfast. Its ideal for corporate get-togethers, families, couples and those travelling on their own.
