We enjoyed the warm welcome, augmented by tea and home baking on the verandah. This traditional heritage house oozed charm combined with quality. Furnishings and fittings were antique and all worked perfectly. Tapestries, quilts and cushions were exquisite and all made by our hostess, Marilyn, a very talented lady. The garden, another of Marilyn's talents, was beautifully relaxing and filled with a huge variety of fruit trees, the produce of which, was much in evidence at breakfast. There can be no better way to start a day than to have the wonderful breakfast (everything was home made) in that lovely warm traditional kitchen.
We stayed in a delightful bedroom at the back of the house. Gorgeous fresh roses added to the ambience. All the floors, and much else in the house, were made from kauri wood which had such a warm rich colour - and not a creak could be heard. The house was positioned just across the road from a lovely little bay, used by the local yacht club and the walk into the centre of Russell took a pleasant 10 or 15 minutes. Parking was just outside the garden gate.
This is a wonderful place to stay. If you get the opportunity to stay here, don't miss it.

We recently spent a weekend in the beautiful country cottage attached to Ounuwhao Harding House. Together with our overseas visitors we were 'blown away' with the charming decor and wonderful patchwork quilts. It is a joy to explore the cottage and enjoy all the clever and quirky nooks and crannies. Then there is the garden and casual outdoor furniture to tempt you to relax under the fruit trees. We were also lucky to enjoy the delicious breakfast in the main house - another artistic masterpiece. What a fantastic experience - we would thoroughly recommend this B & B or self-catering cottage as a very special experience. Thank you, Marilyn.

Marilyn is an amazing innkeeper. She welcomed us with a nice cup of tea and showed us to our room, or rather, to our cottage!!! She has some beautiful rooms in the main house, but we were just behind the house in our own cottage. The room was so beautiful, I almost gasped. It was huge and the bathroom was also large. Marilyn is the most talented quilter I have ever met. the quilt on our bed was a museum piece -- really!! She had left the means to prepare tea or coffee as well as cookies for us. In the garden were fruit trees of every kind and her jams are really delicious. She made such nice breakfasts for us that we had no need to have lunch.

It is truly a gracious, peaceful, beautiful place to stay in Russell.

We spent 5 nights in the Cottage and Marilyn and Lee made us feel very welcome on arrival. The Cottage was spotless and very well equipped with everything you needed (and more). The location was beautiful with views over to the bay and it was so quiet and peaceful. The quilts made by Marilyn were works of art and added a real personal touch to the Cottage. Breakfast was delicious as was the fruit cake left in the cottage for us. It was also only a lovely10 minute walk into the centre of Russell. I would highly recommend Ounuwhao Harding House and we will certainly be back.
