This lovely old hotel was recommended by some NZ friends and it really is excellent. The staff are very friendly and helpful - more than is required by the job, the bar and restaurant are delightful - the location is perfect to have a relaxing glass of wine just watching the world go by. The food is superb and the whole place is clean and comfortable. Our only problem was that our room was tiny! Almost certainly my fault when booking but, as we were away from home for 8 weeks and had a lot of luggage, it really was a bit of a problem! However as we only slept in the room and everything else was very nearly perfect we didn't let it worry us.
I can't recommend this highly enough

Room Tip: If you are there for longer than one night do make sure you have one of their larger rooms! Some of...

We started our 4 week New Zealand sojourn at the Duke of Marlborough in Russell. What a gem! The room was comfortable and clean, the food at the restaurant wonderful, the staff helpful and the setting idyllic. Our favorite time in New Zealand! We wandered the small town, visited its sights, traveled by ferry around the Bay of Islands and ended each day with an outdoor meal on the porch of the Duke, watching the sun set. Our senses were very much alive and it was the perfect way to end a day of touring. The location is wonderful for a family with teens or young adults as the opportunity to wander yet stay close is always there. It is just a fun place to be!

Room Tip: Try for room facing the bay!

When we saw the size of our room we were a little uncertain about staying the full 3 nights, but were totally won over and could have stayed longer. Room fresh, clean and light. I even liked the curtain material. Fantastic staff. The maître d' even got a waitress to run down and get a newspaper from the nearby supermarket for us when we asked about one. One of the managers was very attentive and charming as were the reception staff. It felt as if the staff had had extra training. Continental breakfast included-even gluten free bread. And more than adequate. Dinner was fantastic with attentive service and great food, and there was a wonderful buzz about the place. Having coffee, beer and dinner on the veranda overlooking the sea fantastic. The old, antique furniture charming. My slightly fussy and neat freak husband was even won over and delighted by the hotel and environs. What a find! Would definitely stay again. Good that it wasn't a large impersonal hotel.

We stayed in a sundeck suite. The room was clean, comfortable and perfect for a small family.

The hotel is a lovely old building and the veranda was the place to be on a sunny afternoon. Truly stunning location.

The hotel is an excellent location, just a short walk from the pier for tour departures and within easy reach of the rest of Russell and its many restaurants and cafes.

We stayed at The Duke from 8th to 11th Feb. 2014.
On entering reception, we were spoken to in a quite offhand and distracted manner. After check in we were taken to our room,up 20or so stairs with no offer of help for our luggage. I am afit and fairly strong guy but I wonder how all the little old ladies and men cope with this climb.
Breakfast on Sunday morning was a complete shambles! No cups available until we found someone to go out the back. No jugs for the milk, no jam in the pots plus lukewarm water in the water urn.
It was a lot better on Monday morning, I guess because the boss lady was there.
Our room was not a bad size but The bed was not that comfortable.
A great location, the staff in the dining room were a delight and the food for dinner was excellent..
I think overall The Duke has improved since we last visited 3 years ago, but they still have a way to go.

Room Tip: Book early
