We spent 3 nights in Russell over winter and ate here twice for dinner. On both occasions the meals were enjoyable, the atmosphere pleasant and the place warm - the open fire with sofas at one end of the dinning room being a nice place to sit. The Duke is a lodge more than a pub so the bar was a place for a quite drink. Perfectly positioned on the waters edge we could see how popular the outside deck would be in summer.

We arrived in picturesque Russell at 7.00pm without a booking, having spoken to the lady on the Ferry she said try the Duke of Marlborough. What a surprise, the food was sublime the accommodation was comfortable and the staff pleasant and attentive. We will be returning from Aus in the summer to better experience this wonderful town and Hotel.

We couldn't fault the place at all, the location was superb, food was fantastic, hospitality was top-notch and we had the best weather! Russell really turned on the charm for us... let's just say we fell in love with Russell, and the Duke had a lot to do with it!

Definitely recommend the Duke as a destination point for a fab long weekend.

My husband and I went here for a mid-winter treat, it was beautiful. The food was absolutely delicious, from the mains, to the dessert , and breakfast aswell with a good range of delicious items to eat including their home-made museli which tasted baked to an absolute delight.
Lovely and friendly service, very helpful, lended us their dvd player, gave us keys to play on the tennis court accross the road, room service, tidy and clean bedrooms. Magnificent little place in Russell which has so much character, fresh flowers around the place, roaring fire in winter, candlelights and beautiful character lampshades. Russell is truly beautiful, such a gorgeous little town by the waterfront, everything is in close walking distance which makes it so relaxing. Just pop out of the Duke and read a book right on the peaceful serene waterfront. Thanks for making our stay so wonderful, easy and relaxing!

My husband organized a fantastic surprise party at the Duke. We live locally in Paihia so it was nice not to have to go far for a brilliant night, with great food and beautiful accommodation. All 15 of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals and the service and atmosphere was great. A night in a lovely room with sea views topped off the best birthday! Without a doubt the best food i've had in Russell and very good value accommodation (and we know what's available in this area).

We had two glorious nights here and it was fabulous!!! The meals were delicious, the service was fantastic and the staff were lovely! We had our first honeymoon in Russell 25 years ago and Russell has not lost its romantic appeal even on the wet day we had there we still had so much to do and see. The room was beautifully warmed for us prior to our arrival and was comfort personified.

Room Tip: We had a standard room the bed was very comfortable & the outside decking was perfect. Next tim...

If you choose the sea view rooms, you will have spectacular views across the bay. The location is ideal to explore the bays from the main land, although the 2 minute ferry at $NZ22 return for vehicle plus extra for passengers could get expensive if you are planning on frequent journeys. There are lot of good walks around Russell, small beaches, and coves, and not a lot of people around this time of the year, so no traffic. Food is great, and a popular place to eat in the Duke, and there are other good restaurants close by. The rooms are good size and comfortable, quaint central heating with portable electric radiators, and heating lamps, but this just adds to the character of the place, and, it is not cold. Friendly and accommodating people.

Room Tip: Go for a waterfront/bay view room, bit more expensive but worthwhile.
