Owner description: Pompallier Mission, where Catholic missionaries translated religious texts into Maori, printed and bound them into beautiful books, was a saintly enclave in the most sinful site of the southern seas. In what is undoubtedly one of the best heritage tours in the country, our passionate guides will take you through the steps of leather and book-making as it was done by courageous pioneers living in this tiny outpost, over 150 years ago. Hear the stories of the lives and times of French missionaries caught up in British Treaty-making and war between Maori and European settlers. Delight in our award winning heritage gardens, take in the wonderful views across the Bay and browse our gift shop for a unique reminder of a special place.

“Excellent. Catch a tour”
Reviewed December 27, 2013 via mobile

Without the tour it would take 10 minutes and be meaningless. Catch a guided tour and the place comes alive. It's fascinating.

“Guided tour essential”
Reviewed December 23, 2013

We were lucky to jump on to the guided tour just as it was starting. It would be difficult to work out what all of the equipment was used for without the tour. Lovely gardens and very peaceful. Good to spend around an hour looking around.

“Make sure you get the included guided tour.”
Reviewed November 9, 2013

Make sure you time your visit for included guided tour. Great guides really make the place come to life. Very interesting site where we learnt the meaning of quoined a phrase, cut to the chase, paper boy and many others and the history of the area. Worth the $10 pp entry fee.
