We were in Russell over a wet winter weekend in August , so very low season, but on both Friday and Saturday nights, the restaurant here was buzzing. Very spacious and cosy place with tons of atmosphere. The place is steeped in local history and the many photos on the walls tell some of the pictorial story. Great food, probably one of the best seafood chowder's I've ever had by the way. You can't go to Paihia or Russell without a visit to the Duke. The bar is also well stocked and the staff were great.

went for a cuppa to have an experience, as it was highly recommended by locals. Food is expensive. Was disappointed that there was no home baking etc to go with my coffee. It did have a nice feeling with the fire going and leather couches to sit on was a nice touch.

Although we didn't plan to go in this rather nobel restaurant we finally had to. All the others were closed... But we don't regret :-)
What a surprise to see the menu: There's something for everyone. Two of us choosed the T-Bone-Steak which was very tasty, and the chicken aswell was really yummy. A great surprise were the soupe of the day with blue cheese and the salade with quinoa and pumpkin.
And the desserts....what to say... just heavenly!
One day we'll come back!

It's not the cheapest, but it is good. We ate in the restaurant rather than the bar, service was friendly and polite, wonderful atmosphere with great views, excellent fish and chips.

This was a bit of a splurge for us, was great to have a formal sit down after days of take always. One of the best meals we had in NZ, hotel was fresh and a great place for relaxed after hours drink.

It was quiet when we went, must be way busy in summer. Russell is a lovely town.
