David McKenzie at Arcadia Lodge at Matauwhi Bay in Russell recommended the Phantom for a day's sailing in the Bay of Islands, and he helped with the booking. We had a great experience. Favourable winds powered Phantom along at 8 knots while Rick Blomfield trimmed the sails with Robyn at the helm. Rick named the islands and rocks we were passing, and provided some of their history. Like Whale Rock which James Cook struck in 1769. Our lunch stop was a sheltered beach on Waewaetorea Island. He also provided his unique anti-seasickness remedy for two of our sailors - and it worked. On the sail back to Russell we spotted a shark - possibly a bronze whaler. Rick caught a "mouse" kingfish which was returned to the water to grow a bit! It really was an excellent day's sailing. But the day's highlight for us was having fish (John Dory) and chips at the Russell Boating Club where Rick and Robyn are members. This we found out when they arrived. We were able to share some more laughs as the photographs and maps on the wall were explained. Phantom does have a great record in the Tall Ship's Race. This is a must experience for anyone with a love of sailing.
