Owner description: A day out on Phantom gives you a chance to get away from the crowds. This is adventure, relaxation and scenic beauty all in one with the personal atmosphere created by your hosts, Rick and Robin. Enjoy a great home cooked lunch amongst the beauty of the islands on this great owner- operator boat.

David McKenzie at Arcadia Lodge at Matauwhi Bay in Russell recommended the Phantom for a day's sailing in the Bay of Islands, and he helped with the booking. We had a great experience. Favourable winds powered Phantom along at 8 knots while Rick Blomfield trimmed the sails with Robyn at the helm. Rick named the islands and rocks we were passing, and provided some of their history. Like Whale Rock which James Cook struck in 1769. Our lunch stop was a sheltered beach on Waewaetorea Island. He also provided his unique anti-seasickness remedy for two of our sailors - and it worked. On the sail back to Russell we spotted a shark - possibly a bronze whaler. Rick caught a "mouse" kingfish which was returned to the water to grow a bit! It really was an excellent day's sailing. But the day's highlight for us was having fish (John Dory) and chips at the Russell Boating Club where Rick and Robyn are members. This we found out when they arrived. We were able to share some more laughs as the photographs and maps on the wall were explained. Phantom does have a great record in the Tall Ship's Race. This is a must experience for anyone with a love of sailing.

If you hate the crowds and don't want to fight with 200 camera wielding tourists for a glimpse of a harassed dolphin, then this is the boat for you!

Rick & Robin offer a friendly, peaceful private sailing experience with a personal touch and all for the same price as the mainstream commercialised option! Good food, great sailing and a dolphin friendly way to see them! They only take up to 10 people to keep it personal, it's a real sail boat so the destination for the day is not set - you go where the wind takes you but that's part of the adventure and in the bay of islands you can't really go wrong! We stopped at a beautiful paradise island for a swim, trek and some beach time, while Robin prepared a delicious home made lunch, on board the yacht! If you are keen on sailing, they have been round the world on their boat so they will show you some real sailing and even let you have a go! If you would rather take it easy then that's what they'll do! The key to this trip is, it's personal, friendly and tailored to what you want! It's like having your own boat for the day! Can't wait to go back!

Thank you for writing this review. The best part of our job, after the sailing, is that personal touch. We enjoy getting to know our guests and it's great to hear that we're doing the right thing. Hope to see you again!

If you want a fabulous day of sailing in a beautiful location with great food and company, hop on board with Rick and Robin. Our day of sailing with these two friendly and experienced skippers was one of the best things we did in New Zealand. It was a glorious day of sun, sea, sail and gourmet food. Whizzing past the other sailing competition with their passengers packed to the gunwales made
us realize what a good choice we made.
We can't wait for Rick's soon to be released memoirs. They are sure to be a real page turner.
Thanks for a memorable day.

We knew we wanted to sail, that is what you do here in the Bay of Islands, but we did not want to go on a big tour boat. We were thrilled to find Phantom Sailing and loved going out with Rick and Robin. They keep the numbers down (under 10, we had 8), personalize the experience, and feed you delicious home cooked food. We even booked last minute, only an hour before the trip left, with no problems. Definitely recommend this trip to any travelers who are looking for a fun, relaxed atmosphere. FYI it is BYOB if interested.

We had a wonderful day with Rick and Robin sailing on Phantom. It's a lovely boat and Rick and Robin are very relaxing and delightful hosts. They have a lot of local knowledge about the area, as well as sailing. We sailed to Robertson Island, stopped for a swim and a stroll up a hill for gorgeous views. The sailing was fun, fast and not at all intimidating, even if you haven't sailed before. A big bonus, passenger size is limited to 10 people so you feel that this is a very personal experience. Robin's home cooked lunch (even the bread) was delicious (and healthy.) Loved it, and would highly recommend this as a great day out. Anne and Stuart
