The food was amazing. We had a set menu with cocktails to start. There was a muck up with our food though, and our order got a bit lost. People were coming, eating and leaving before we got ours. They were very apologetic and offered us a free drink. Our dinner took an hour to get to us, but they were very lovely so it was ok.

They make "do" with the cards they've be dealt. It's an upstairs and street level restaurant and bar. Bar is downstairs with nice banquette seating with comfortable cushions but road noise is very much apparent. Up stairs is quieter with nice tables and chairs but again it does have it's faults. In summer windows must be open especially in the afternoon and this allows the road noise in. Sunsets are beautiful but the glare is very hard on the eyes as is the lighting once it is dark. If you've a front table, it's almost like being on stage. Lights are small spots aimed right at ones eyes. I had to insist one evening that the previous owner please get the light out of my eyes. He did finally but only after much discussion. New owners now 2011 & 12 and seem to be a lot more experienced than the last owner/s . Again as with the "Boat Shed" just opposite, there is a lack of decor. It's clean and nice but just has no real soul. Menu is adequate with most of the standards covered. They've even had scallops on the menu which is rarely seen in Nelson, even though the surrounding Bays are crawling with these delights. Wine selection is quite good but could perhaps be a bit more up market rather than "just the usual" which everyone seems to stock. Wait staff are friendly and we've even manage to have the same waitress 3 times now... which again is rare in this town. Overall a very pleasant place for lunch and dinner only slightly spoiled by being on the wrong side of the road. (HWY 6 ) Oh.... and you can get a Bloodymary here when you visit for Brunch or Lunch. :)

Lovely place for a group of people to enjoy very nice food and great service. The sunny day made the views from upstairs just devine. Everyone enjoyed their meals and had a wonderful time. Would definitely recommend it.

The food and service were excellent as the person who recommended the place told us to expect. The wine list was a pleasant surprise and menus for lunch, dinner and weekends offer great variety. All reasonably priced.

The Harbour Lights Bistro is an excellent restaurant and we were treated with service that was more than expected. We made a booking for 4. They advertise a dish with 800gms of Green Shell Mussels, steamed in Beer with garlic and Fresh herbs and toasted bread. When we ordered, we found that they had sold out of this dish. We understood and were not upset, however, one of our party explained to the waiter that he had come from Sydney, just to have this dish. The waiter went away and spoke to the chef and came back and advised that they actually had enough mussels for less than one full serve and if my friend was interested, the chef could add some cockles to the dish and make up a special dish for him. He jumped at the opportunity and when the dish arrived he was not disappointed. The shell fish were cooked to perfection and the taste was superb. The rest of us had the fish special of the day which was Groper with Agria potatoes, green asparagus and white truffle sauce. The flavours, cooking and presentation were faultless. Washed down with a bottle of local Tasman Bay Chardonnay, while watching the sailing boats in the harbour across the road, meant that the meal was memorable.
