every one at the table loved the scallops. . the service while v friendly was a bit hap hazard. I had the pork belly and it was juicy and fell apart and tasty. the truffle mash was silken heaven, breakfast was also really good apart from the bloody toaster - needs to be

Party of four - two had fish of the day, two had fish and chips. The two who had the fish of the day were disappointed in the portion size, and my fish and chips were very poor. The batter had been cooked in oil that was not hot enough (and so was greasy) and yet they had still managed to overcook the fish by leaving it in too long. Really basic errors. The dining room is showing its age, and service was slow (although pleasant enough once present). A pretty poor advertisement for Nelson's best hotel. A couple of hundered meters away is Hopgoods which serves infinitely better food at pretty much the same price.

Very friendly Rutherford Hotel staff, but buffet breakfast was average, and the dinner seemed expensive for what it was. Disappointed by the wine list.

My now fiance and I wanted some nice seafood while we were traveling through Nelson. We had been recommended Oceano. We had a booking and when we arrived, we were told there was no room in the restaurant and we'd have to wait outside in the bar. When we finally entered the restaurant, half an hour after our booking time, it was practically deserted.

We were seated by a lady, who was nice enough but sounded like she had emphysema and continued to cough and splutter around us. When we asked what she wine she recommended she replied with "white wine, because white wine goes with fish". I just feel as a nice/ on the more expensive side of restaurants, the waitstaff should not only be presented well, but have substantial knowledge of food and wine.

As it was an anniversary dinner and we wanted it to be nice, we chose to go elsewhere.

'THE BOAT SHED' IS FANTASTIC AS AN ALTERNATIVE.

We ate here after arriving in Nelson in the late afternoon and checking into the Rutherford Hotel in which the restaurant is housed. I am always wary of hotel restaurants, but this was good. The fresh fish of the day, which was gurnard, was simply grilled. It was was lovely and certainly very fresh. The meat dishes were also very good, and I would certainly eat here again. The wine list is limited, but there are a few good ones to choose from.
