A Culinary Experience Luxury B and B
Ranked #15 of 55 Nelson B&B and Inns
Reviewed April 4, 2014

For those of us who travel a lot, finding a very nice B&B with great view, interesting grounds, and lovely hosts is not a regular experience. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at A Culinary Experience in Nelson, at the end of a 3 weeks tour of NZ. On my arrival, Kay and Joe welcomed me more like an old friend than a first time customer they had just picked up after arriving (yes they do come and pick you up on arrival from airport or coach station). They are a lovely couple who are genuinely interested in making their guests stay comfortable and enriching. I thoroughly enjoyed staying at their place, and highly recommend their B&B to anybody who enjoys culture, arts, food, views, interesting gardens and pets, and a very good time with very interesting hosts. Nelson, NZ is a very nice and interesting little town, with lots of culture, fantastic Tasmin sea beaches, great shops and restaurants, and a must see as part of any good trip itinerary in NZ.

My husband and I were lucky enough to stay at A Culinary Experience for three days in March and can not say enough nice things. The hosts, Kay and Joe, were amazing and went out of their way to make us feel like friends rather than guests. If you are looking for a home away from home stay, this is the place to be. The rooms are spacious, clean and have amazing views. There is also a tremendous amount of privacy. The rooms have a nice assortment of teas and coffees with milk in the refrigerator. Kay even leaves fresh baked cookies for you. The breakfasts were incredible! Kay and Joe use fresh eggs from their chickens, blue berries from their garden and enhance the food with herbs they have grown. Kay is an incredible cook! Adding on the Culinary Experience was worth the time and money. We came home with several new recipes that we want to share with our friends. We would certainly stay there again!

Room Tip: As for the room on the far east side - more privacy and spectacular views!

Kay and Joe are welcoming hosts who love to share their passion for the Nelson area. The rooms are luxurious and comfortable with great attention to detail, down to the wide range of quality teas provided. The house sits high on a hill overlooking the remarkable ‘Boulder Bank’ a 13 km long stretch of rocky substrate which divides the Tasman Bay from the placid water on the landward side called the Nelson Haven. When the tide’s out the haven becomes very shallow in places, creating wonderful, constantly changing patterns. It's a magical spot. Kay's meals are absolutely delicious, with many ingredients sourced from her garden. The infrared sauna, about which we were initially a little hesitant, turned out to be a cleansing experience, well worth a try.

The food, accomodation and location all absolutely superb and then sitting round the table, enjoying such wonderful food and wine in such fantastic company made our 5 day stay in lovely Nelson truly remarkable.
