The private gardens are outside Hope so quite a way out of Nelson but we eventually found them. The gardens were beautiful but it was a very windy day so we didn't stay very long.

I can't agree more with previous review , this place is a slice of peaceful heaven, and such a contrast to it's surroundings. While there is only toilet facilities no cafe or shop, this is the beauty of it, no crowds. The gardens have a range of garden rooms, vista's and grasses areas, benches and table seating. I noticed in the visitors book that it is visited by locals and new zealanders a lot, but not known to tourists much. Take a book or picnic and drink ( or visit nearby winery cafes beforehand in Appleby). We visited here after a long couple days sightseeing and spent a couple of hours relaxing on the grass under the tree canopy looking out over the pond and even dozed off for a while. To think that this is one man's work and started out as his backyard.please put the $5 entrance fee in the honor box so he can maintain and continue to extend these lovely gardens.

If you find the time to visit Nelson please take the time to drive out to the Gardens of the World, the owner has put in many hours (Years) to make this one of the best privately owned gardens I have ever walked through. Great for a Sunday lunch or perhaps a family get together..
