Owner description: The historic Rochdale Cider Factory in Stoke is the home of McCashin's Brewery, where the "Craft Beer Revolution" was started in 1981 by Terry McCashin. Rochdale Cider is still brewed on site, along with Stoke Beer, Palaeo Water, Stoke Ginger Beer and Lemon Lime & Bitters. The Brewery is a ‘must visit’ while in Nelson, offering daily brewery tours, free tastings, a cafe, bottlestore and bar. You can also make a day of it by checking out the Great Taste Trail as well, a popular walking and biking trail which runs behind the Brewery. There are other craft breweries close by you can visit too.And if you’re staying a bit longer, there’s happy hour 4pm-6pm weekdays, free quiz night every Thursday, Texas Hold’em Poker on Friday nights, McCashin’s Market every Saturday from 12-4pm, live music Saturday 1-5pm and Sundays 2-6pm, family friendly atmosphere, garden bar, $10 woodfired pizzas Thurs-Sun and Sublime coffee seven days a week from 7am. And did we mention great beer?McCashin's is open from 7am seven days a week and serves locally made Sublime Coffee. The Cafe was voted Best Cafe in Nelson's 2012 Top Shop Awards. Locals say the coffee is amongst the best in Nelson. Foodwise, don't expect a full cooked meal ... but the cabinet food offerings such as the home-made sausage rolls and beef and Stoke Beer pies, wraps, bagels, cakes, muffins, salads etc. are pretty good.

We stumbled across this place while on a bike ride out of Nelson. We arrived at 2pm, and by sheer luck there was a brewery tour starting just then. The tour is hour long and takes you right into the guts of the working brewery. Our guide was very enthusiastic and informative, and gave a bit of history. The brewery is owned and operated by the McCashin family, which originally produced the "Mac" label beer found throughout NZ. The Mac label has since been sold to a big multinational, and after a 10-year hiatus due to a non-compete clause the McCashin family has resumed making beer under the Stoke brand name. On the tour, we were shown the equipment used, as well as the different kinds of hops and malt both local and imported that the brewery uses. The tour concludes with tastings of -all- the beers on tap, almost a dozen, covering both their standard as well as their premium "bomber" range. The tour is well worth the 10NZD price.

The brewery itself has all of their beers (and ciders) on tap. On occasion, they also have development beers that they do not bottle and are only available on tap at the brewery - unfortunately there weren't any when we visited. There are some basic bar snacks but no meals. They also sell bottles that are overfilled or underfilled as seconds.

We also came back to try pizza from their woodfired oven (Thursdays and Fridays after 5:30pm). The pizza was decent, and the place was packed with local clientele.

If you enjoy the occasional glass of beer, and want to know a little more about how it is made, then doing the McCashin Brewery Tour will give you some insight into the process. This is a small brewery and you can see and taste the different malted grains used as the base of the many beers made here, in the old Rochdale Apple Cider factory. They still make apple cider as well and on the day we visited that is what they were bottling . At the end of the tour, you are invited to sample about 8 to 10 of their brews to taste the variation in flavours they produce. The tour, including the tasting, takes about an hour and for $10, it is a nice way to while away an hour.
