Good location, large airy rooms with balcony overlooking the river. Clean, modern and comfortable - will be back.

Only comment would be that pillows were not to my liking as I like high firm pillows, but this may not be an issue for everyone.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I'm delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay and will revisit us in the future. Possibly the spare pillows in each room might make your next stay that little bit more comfortable.

Recently started here, rooms are a good size - could do with a little maintain but nothing too major. Beds comfy, no lift so you would want to be on the ground floor if you have heaps of gear. Service in restaurant/ bed very slow but food worth waiting for. Free Wifi which is a bonus

The reception staff were so friendly and helpful. The restaurant food was good. We also had Christmas Dinner here and - considering lots of places in NZ put a holiday surcharge on the price - it was pretty good value. Ate outside overlooking the estuary in the sunshine. The serving staff were young and enthusiastic to help. The room was classy and had good attention to detail for travellers needs e.g. a small, sound operated, light in the bathroom for the middle of the night. For the British audience - don't be put off by the name which might sound like a cross between a backpackers and a railway hotel - it isn't either of those.

On a warm summer evening it was really enjoyable to sit on the deck, overlooking the river, drinking a nice cold beer. As others have pointed out, the river is tidal and only looks like the pictures at high tide, but still really pleasant. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Dinner in the restaurant was ok though the portions are small and a little overpriced.

Located just on the edge of the downtown, the Trailways is a friendly and bright hotel. The beds are relatively comfortable, the staff is very helpful, and all rooms have balconies. We were very happy to get a room facing the river, which we enjoyed on our balcony with a glass of wine. Our room had a fridge, extra pillows, underfloor heating in the bathroom and a couch which pulled out into a bed.

The rooms are clean, there is free parking, and it's easy walking into the downtown. We ate breakfast at the restaurant, but it was a bit pricey for our taste.

We stayed here as part of our South Island road trip in April 2012.

We got a great deal on Wotif and the room was really lovely. Nice and clean with modern decor, spa bath and underfloor heating. We had a lovely river view too. We didn't eat at the restaurant however it did look lovely. Reception staff were friendly and check in/out was quick and efficient.

Our only problem was that as our room was on the ground floor right by the door and stairs to the upper level, it was very noisy and because of that we slept terribly.

We would definitely stay here again but not in that particular room.

Room Tip: Don't let them put you in the ground floor room by the stairs - very noisy!

This is a typical stay in a small town in New Zealand; the rooms are quite small, but spotlessly presented. The staff were very friendly and informal. The guide book picture is perhaps flattering as the restaurant and verandah look out onto the river, not the sea, and this is tidal. However, the food was good if just a wee bit pricey. It is only a very short walk into town anyway and there are plenty of restaurants from which to choose. Nelson is a delightful place and the walking up into the hills is beautiful.

Room Tip: The river side does have a better view.
