“Very spacious Executive Room in good location”
Reviewed March 22, 2013

Our travel agent arranged for us to stay in an Executive Room (#805), which came with single and double beds, vanity table with stool, desk with chair, luggage bench, easy chair, coffee maker, fridge, and closet with an ironing board and iron. The rooms are air conditioned unlike many NZ rooms we stayed in over a month. The bathroom was well equipped with four large towels (yes!), tissue, shampoo, soap, and lotion. There was one bathrobe for the two of us and no slippers. Our room looked out over the side street and parking area where we were able to park our car overnight, avoiding the hotel's parking charge. The room was quiet and we heard no street noise at all.
There are laundry rooms for $3 tokens on the 4th and 6th floors. we used their free wifi (for up to 1/2 hour and 15 MB. to keep up with mail. The hotel also charges an additional 1.5% for credit card use.
The hotel has a large lobby and a second Japanese restaurant, which looked quite busy that night. They have meeting rooms and advertised for weddings. The pool seemed to be undergoing renovations.
The hotel is just below the (new) Nelson cathedral and within walking distance to the main areas of downtown Nelson. We only found bars and restaurants intent on playing loud music so we dined on appetizers in the hotel's restaurant. The Nelson scallops were EXCELLENT as were the green lipped mussels. The steamed vegetables and Nelson Chardonnay were average. We had the typical, large NZ buffet breakfast early the next morning. There seemed to be a few business people up early.
Based on our experience, this hotel is a solid 4-star by European standards.
In case you need to know, it took us a little under two hours to get to the Picton Ferry from Nelson along the Queen Charlotte drive, starting around 7:00 am.

We won a mystery trip to Nelson so were booked into the Rutherford Hotel. What a lovely hotel! Rooms were spotlessly clean and well stocked. The rooms were alot more roomier than your average hotel and you could even open the windows! - which was lovely!

The outlook was fantastic - looking across to Christ Church and the green hills in the background. Fantastically located just a few minutes walk to the city - so cafes, restaurants and even a movie theatre so close by - great if you don't have a car!

Bathroom robes and the morning newspaper were much-appreciated added touches.

The staff were all very friendly and helpful. Overall we had a lovely stay and would certainly come back to stay at the Rutherford on our next trip down to Nelson.

We spent one night here after our kayaking tour in Abel Tasman National Park. In need of a good bed and a bit of luxury - we were not disappointed, Sure it was a little more than I would usually pay at NZ$175, but it was well worth it to top off a brilliant and strenuous couple of days.
The hotel is a 5 minute walk to the center of the city and cathedral, our room was spacious and the beds were very conducive to a good night's sleep.
Although there is no WiFi available yet in the rooms, there is an internet connection available - fine for a laptop.
I was delighted to find an iron and ironing board hidden away in the closet. A necessity after having our clothes shoved into a kayak. The only thing to get a minus is the shower - over the bath and poor water pressure, but it works. Bathrobes, slippers, newspaper in the morning all added to a very positive impression,
I can't comment on the restaurants, as we didn't eat there, but I can say that the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Location is very good, few minutes walk to central area of Nelson with good bars and restaurants. Our room was high with the most wonderful view. Spotlessly clean and well equipped. A big and busy hotel, but staff were still extremely helpful and friendly.

Room Tip: Higher floors have great views.

Stayed here 2 nights on business and had a great experience. Sure, as noted elsewhere, the hotel doesn't look like much from the outside but it's much better once you get in. Room was excellent, good size with great light from windows in 2 walls...I had a corner room. It was very comfortalbe with a nice bed and well appointed throughout. Bathroom was a good size too. Staff were friendly and helpful and the hotel is in a great location. Didn't eat in house so cannot help there...there are good eating options closeby the hotel. Nice touch for car nuts is the rotation of vintage cars through the lobby...very nice Volvo P1800 in residence when I was there. I'd certainly stay there again.

I had stayed here before for a different conference a few years ago. I am not sure if the hotel has had a little spruce up because the room seemed fresh and more contemporary than I remember from last time. Service was great, particularly good reception, I arrived late in the evening from the airport and the greeting and whole check in process was super easy and relaxed. Special mention must go to the technical staff running the sound and projection of presentations at the hotel who, again, did a great job. There is an atmosphere of confidence about how this hotel runs that meant I felt very relaxed.

Room Tip: 505 was lovely

This hotel in wonderfully situated, on a quiet(ish) street only 2 or 3 minutes walk from the best part of town for cafes, restaurants, shopping etc. The rooms are well appointed, and the staff are friendly and helpful. I have only two quibbles. The first is minor: the air-conditioning in my room was noisy (so I switched it off). The second is bigger: like many hotels in NZ, this one charges and arm and a leg for internet usage. Why does that happen, when backpacker houses often charge nothing, building the internet cost into their (already low) rates? It's a rip-off.
