I was able to call this wonderful place home for over two months... I only intended on staying there a week when I first arrived. The house is colonial, beautiful and very well furnished (good job Dave!), located in one of the sunniest places in New Zealand (the Palace is situated atop a hill, just the place to receive all that glorious sunshine). Complete with real beds, real coffee, free breakfast, hammocks, balconies, greenery, smoking hut, courtyard, large kitchen, guitars, piano, games, dining room, views of the town and ocean, tv room, and internet, you will never have to leave! I miss it dearly. It has atmosphere unlike any other hostel I've visited. And cats.

Room Tip: My favourite room is "the conservatory". Lots of sunshine.

The Palace Backpackers is a warm friendly beautiful place. You are made to feel like part of a community, not like a $ sign as with so many backpackers on the planet.
High ceilings, sunny rooms, single beds (no Bunks) and FREE BREAKFAST & BAKERY!
One of the gems of Nelson...Heck, its one of the gems of New Zealand!
I Loved Living hear!!!

Room Tip: All The rooms are the best, but for morning sunshine Upstairs balcony rules!

I stumbled across the palace right around christmas time. I had actually been calling around and everywhere was booked right up or they didn't accept bookings without a credit card number (which I didn't have at the time). It was a lucky find! Dave and the staff organized a full on Christmas dinner for all of us staying there during the holidays. It was wonderful! I ended up staying for about a month or two after that. It was a difficult place to leave.

This place is a little gem! No bunks. Big old colonial house. A verandah with a view of the sea and Centre of NZ Hill. A music room with a real piano. A hot tub that actually works and is actually clean! Free breakfast and free bakery EVERY DAY! A chill out room. The friendliest staff I ever came across (Michael and Dave were pretty groovy peeps). Warm and snug. A social environment that was both convivial and cultural. This place is the sort of backpackers that ruins other backpackers because you end up making comparrisons. Good stuff Palace. You may not suit everyone's taste, but then neither does Marmite, and I freaking love that too....

Room Tip: Main house....

I stayed two weeks in December and loved it. The hostel was fully booked when me and my four year old daughter arrived late at night but the owner made a bed for us in one of the staff bedrooms. There's a great atmosphere and my daughter became really good friends with everybody there. We spent Christmas there and felt really home. Thank you Dave and the rest of the staff!

We've stayed in a lot of hostels in NZ and this is most probably the worst by a mile. The staff were very rude and made us feel very uncomfortable, especially the owner who was swearing and shouting at staff in front of us. very cold.

The palace backpackers was one of my top two in New Zealand. The place was fully booked every night we were there and they had to keep turning people away.

The staff are awesome, they go out of their way to help you and are easy to chat to about everything. There's a great social area that unlike some doesn't close outside and inside with super comfy sofas. There's an outside sitting area, an inside dining room and then a tv room which is quieter as not to disturb guests. Breakfast (cereal, bread, fruit if you're up early enough!) is free and sometimes you can grab free food from the bakery around 5pm each day but it goes fast so you have to be quick.

The kitchen's pretty big and is well equipped with spices, pots, pans, cutlery, plates etc.and the double rooms are clean and huge. There is also a spa pool outside that closes at 9pm and they have zenbu wifi (pay per 50mb) but if you sit upstairs on the balcony or down at the bottom of the garden, you can grab Macdonalds wifi for free.

The place itself is 10 minute walk from countdown (food shopping) 5 minute from New World (food shopping) 5 minutes from town shops and about 20 minute walk to the gardens and to the park where the trek to the "centre of New Zealand" is, so great location!

The one negative is that the reception closes at 9pm so if you want anything after that you can't really get hold of anyone but they open at 6am.

I would definitely recommend this hostel but make sure you book in advance!
