“Lovely Home”
Reviewed April 30, 2013

Retiro Park Lodge was the first stop on the South Island during our trip around New Zealand. It is a really lovely house, set in beautiful gardens. Unfortunately, Robbert, one of the owners, had been called away before our arrival, so we did not get to meet him during our stay. However, Victor was a great host. Nothing was too much trouble for him and he made some great suggestions of where to visit in and around Nelson. Victor also cooked a lovely meal for us on our first evening and it was great to sit and chat to him over a few glasses of wine. Would highly recommend Retiro Park Lodge if you are visiting Nelson. Flavia is also very beautiful!

Robbert and Victor are the most accommodating, generous and entertaining guys. They were game enough to let us take over for the day of our wedding with 80-90 guests rolling in to enjoy the beautiful gardens. Super helpful with the planning and so good at keeping the busy mood light and fun.

We (the happy couple) spent our first married night at the lodge, we enjoyed a beautiful breakfast the following morning and I really couldn't think of a thing I would change about our day!

Thank you so much Robbert and Victor for making this girls dream wedding a reality.

This is one of the most beautiful places we have ever stayed. Robbert and Victor have created a quiet, rural idyll by hard work and with very good taste. We stayed in the Barn, a large self-contained room over what will soon be the winery, on the track out past the luxury chicken run, the beehives to the newly planted vines and olive groves, passing the Alpacas quietly grazing. With beautiful trees and gardens, a pool, a fantasy tree house and 30 hectares of land there is plenty to enjoy. Wonderful breakfasts and best of all, two charming hosts who really enjoy meeting people and who we were privileged to share some time with.

It was my daughter's dream to have her wedding at Retiro Park Lodge, having spend most of her childhood years in the Teal Valley.
Although a first for Robert and Victor, they were enthusiastic, accommodating and so helpful in every way.
The grounds were absolutely superb, the weather perfect and we picnicked in the gardens, finding shade under the mature trees.
Robert and Victor are the most hospitable and personable people I have ever met - a stay here would not be regretted. Thanks guys :)

This was part of our special ruby wedding celebratory trip to NZ, Australia and Singapore and were we delighted that we managed to come to this charming place. The lodge itself and the gardens are beautiful and the warm and generous hospitality of our hosts, Robbert and Victor, is genuine and heart warming. Natural raconteurs, they wined, dined, and entertained us over 2 nights superbly prepared dinners by Victor.
If you thinking about booking somewhere different and special - don't hesitate go ahead and book !

Room Tip: We had the patio room - loved it. Spacious, lounge area and large bathroom with small kitchen area t...

When a rock band set up for the week-end outside our window in Hokitika, we found Retiro Park on TripAdvisor and headed north. How were we to know it was to be the nicest B And B we had ever stayed in. Ever.
Robbert and Victor are urbane, witty, and terribly amusing. Their tour of the property was one of the highlights of our month in New Zealand and included their alpacas and llamas, Victor's vineyard (his pinot gris is outstanding), stories of the history of the place, and plenty of marvelous conversation.
The barn (where we stayed) was quiet and shady, and furnished with good taste and wit. That and the main house are in a grove of shrubs and trees raised from dust by Robbert to become an oasis in an already beautiful landscape.
We'll think not of going back to New Zealand, but of returning to Retiro Park.

We escaped the kids for a night and made a last minute booking at Retiro Park Lodge.
So much was great about this place. It is in a wonderfully peaceful rustic setting with lots of options for walks - I think they had something like 30 hectares of land around them.
Wonderfully appointed room (we stayed in the Barn).

The magic ingredient is the hosts, Robert and Victor who had us feeling like we were visiting old friends within minutes of arriving.

We had a great evening with them enjoying their wine made at their farm from grapes from their vineyard, relishing Robert's wonderful cooking, swapping yarns and generally putting the world to rights.
