We stayed three nights at Retiro Lodge and loved every minute of it. Our hosts Robbert and Victor were lovely, very accommodating and always ready to have a chat.

We stayed in the Barn accommodation, which was well appointed, very comfortable and clean - it was so comfortable we spent a day in relaxing when the weather turned.

Victor is a wonderful cook and we ate dinner at the Lodge on our first night, which was delicious and he cooked a feast for breakfast every morning. The property itself is well cared for with a beautiful garden and farm, with many animals happy to say hello.

Make sure to but this on your destination list when you go to Nelson!

My stay in Retiro Park Lodge was a wonderfoul experience. It is located in a valley with amazing views. You can disappear from the routine of the city, and feel the Nature 100% . I learned a lot about wine, animals, fruit trees..The rooms are very comfortable and spacious. But above all I enjoyed a lot, Victor and Robert are lovely people and very friendly. I hope to return again. Thank you very much for your hospitality and your great spirit. I wish you all the best.
THANK YOU !!! GRACIAS!!! BEDANKT!!

Robbert and Victor looked after us for one night on either side of our trip to Abel Tasman. The only sad thing about our trip was we were not able to stay long enough.
We arrived late on the first night but we were still generously treated to a lovely home cooked meal. We stayed in the patio room, a really restful bedroom with gorgeous mosaic bathroom and a bottle of bubbly in the fridge.
Despite being up early on the first morning Victor still cooked us a lovely hot breakfast and Robbert kindly drove us to Nelson. On our return the following day Robbert again picked us up and we arrived "home" in time for a glass of fizz on the terrace followed by a long tour of the fabulous property. Then following a much needed hot shower after our kayaking trip we settled down to mussels, slow cooked lamb shanks and home made creme caramel. Again, gorgeous food and accompanied by Retiro Lodge or other local wines.
Finally our last morning, again an early start, again a lovely hot breakfast and another lift to the airport.
Robbert and Victor have created a very special place at Retiro and the place just keeps on developing. We would have loved to have stayed for longer, or even been there for more time than we were but it simply wasn't possible. Thank you for a wonderful stay and looking after us on our wedding anniversary. You say you hope people arrive as guests and leave as friends - we believe this to be true.
One item to note is that this is a treat of a place to stay and well worth it, even with current strong NZ dollar. Had we stayed when the NZ dollar was weaker against the pound this would have been a steal!

Our two day stay was a fantastic break in our busy lives. We were welcomed warmly and respectfully by Robert and Flavia. The whole package of the house, the out buildings, the garden, the farm, the animal and hosts created a beauitful setting for a wonderful weekend retreat. We felt welcomed, valued and at home throughout our whole stay. The food and its presentation as well as the company made for great eating and fine dining. We will be back. Thank you.

Room Tip: Room is house was great although the barn may be even better.

I am always sceptical of glowing 5-star reviews, especially when not one person has anything to critisise!
But our 3 night stay at Retiro Lodge was outstanding, and will have to join the rest with another 5-star review.
Sadly Victor was unwell, but Robbert organised everything, and was the perfect host. We thoroughly enjoyed his conversation, great cooking and true hearfelt hospitality. It was the little things that meant a lot.
The breakfasts served in a plant covered glass conservatory were huge, and saw you through the rest of the day. Usually Flavia the dog would be curled up asleep somewhere nearby.
The property itself is just 15 minutes drive to the centre of Nelson, and is set on 100 acres of rolling farmland. You are encouraged to explore the farm, and meet all the various animals.....el packers, llamas, donkeys, miniature horses, etc etc.
So, if you are contemplating a stay in the beautiful Nelson region, then Retiro should be top of the list!

Room Tip: If you want more privacy, then "the barn " is a good option.

We spent 2 weeks road-tripping the South Island, stayed in 8 B&B’s (including the 5-star Fiordland Lodge, rated “NZ’s Best Hotel”) and RETIRO LODGE WAS OUR ABSOLUTE FAVORITE!!! The owners, Robbert and Victor, were wonderful - warm, fun & so hospitable. Victor’s dinners (& breakfasts served in our own private converted greenhouse) were divine! Every detail on their expansive property from décor to landscape was beautiful and charming. We spent an entire day just exploring their gorgeous land, shared with friendly alpacas, roaming chickens & ducks, and Flavia, R & V’s loving dog. Just about an hour drive from Abel Tasman & Golden Bay areas, Retiro is NOT just a place to stay…it became an experience in itself and we would return in a heartbeat!

Room Tip: We stayed in “The Barn”, a beautifully restored free-standing guest house - comfy & beautifully...

Exquisite experience! For the scenery a mix between Provence in France and Patagonia in the Andes at just a short distance from Nelson and the sea. Among vineyards and llamas two very spacious rooms beautifully decorated with views on flowers and nature. Eventually the amability of Robert and Victor, the hosts, give the final touch to this place unique in its category!
