Seldom do we find a restaurant that reserves a table for you for the ENTIRE EVENING. This lovely small cottage on a side street was intimate, charming, and captured our tastebuds. The chef is award winning for his lamb and beef and my husband had a wonderful lamb trio cooked to perfection. Our entire experience - from being greeted personally at the front door and being escorted to a small sitting room with couches where we perused the menu and ordered our wine; through the beautiful and delicious gourmet courses; to the actual bill presented in a very classy format - was memorable and a highlight of our dining experiences on this 27 day trip in New Zealand. We cannot say enough about our friendly server! Since we dined early in the evening, we started on the porch and later moved to an inside table.

We had heard a lot of things about the mint dining room, ranging from ecstatic reviews to people describing it as odd and we couldnt wait to check it out ourselves. Following our visit in February we can now agree with the latter: it's odd.

There is no ambience at all, the sitting room where they serve the aperitif lacks athmosphere in every regard, bare walls with nothing to look at but a few framed certificates, wall colour somewhere between mud and dull.

The music was odd also starting off with trite cafe del mar style chill out sessions to more up beat music you'd expect in a late night cocktail bar followed by weird remixes of disco classics.

Although all tables were occupied by fellow diners no one was talking apart from the odd exchange of a whisper here and there. If you despise talking over dinner, enjoy eating your food in total silence and prefer exchanging only glances rather than words with your dinner date this is the place to dine.

Ambience aside the food was odd too and is maybe best described as trying too hard. The menue made most dishes sound adventurous and mouthwateringly exquisite. What arrived on the plate didnt quite live up to the descriptions. Odd flavours left us thinking that sometimes simple dishes well executed go a long way and adventurous combinations that arent well executed are just prone for disappointment. Not one of the 3 courses that either of us had was outstanding. And let's be honest: at the mint pricing we do expect outstanding.

A very memorable meal. Service is perfect, and the food is absolutely amazing. Prices reflect the quality of the experience.

Market fish was stunningly good - best snapper I've ever eaten. Beef dish also superb.

I highly recommend "The Taste of Mint" for dessert - a platter with a sample of every dessert on offer. Wonderful for sharing with your partner.

Online booking system really easy and fast to use.

The meal was okay but not wowee, the service was very slow (only one waitress on duty) and there were only three other tables occupied so hopefully if they are busier, the staff quota is increased (or maybe there were only a few people working in the kitchen ?).

Atmosphere was sorely lacking with only four occupied tables, including ours (all couples) in a confined space with all hard surfaces - everyone whispered and were very self conscious! Bit pretentious being shown into a tiny side room to have your food order taken too. Cute building though in a rather mixed part of town - some rough looking bars close by. Enjoyed Hopgoods more.
