We did the full day great taste trail. Overall the day was fine and we met some good people and had some great beer/wine. I would give the experience a 3.75/5. The trail could be marked a bit better as the more "tastes" you have, the more difficult it is to follow the map and there can be a bit of distance to cover between venues. As it is a self powered/guided tour the price seems a little high as basically you are renting a bike and provided with a map. The $10 for pickup is ok but could be charged per couple (not per person). As for the bikes, they seem of good quality and are in nice shape. I would recommend getting the 21sp over the 7sp as there can be a pretty good wind coming off the water making for a bit of a difficult peddle with fewer gears.

The Breweries were great. Dick at the Lighthouse makes not only some great beer, but he is a real character and great to chat with. Stoke had some of the most interesting flavors of beers I've tasted including a smoke and coconut vanilla along with a dozen others.

Overall it is a nice way to be able to do alcohol tastings with your spouse/friends where you can both enjoy the experience without worrying about who is going to be the sober driver and you get some exercise along the way.

Hiya, thanks for taking the time to review The Gentle Cycling Company.
Just to clarify for other readers, the ride you did was our Full Day Freedom Ride ($45pp) and you added our door-to-door return city shuttle onto that ($10pp). This is a self-guided ride. We provide the bikes, the shuttle and the detailed map. We also provide advice on distances and terrain, and on what is open or closed on the day of your ride. We provide a free bike replacement service if you have a puncture while you are out. The Great Taste Trail is an off-road cycle trail and to get to the wineries you do need to take detours off the marked trail, which involves reading a map. It is certainly a good option to take a 21 speed bike rather than a 7 speed if you are comfortable with lots of gears. Cheers, Rose

We hired bikes three times from the Gentle Cycling Company on our recent stay in Nelson. Rose, the owner, was extremely helpful in planning the routes and the bikes and equipment provided (for an overnight trip) were of top quality.

My partner and I booked the brewery tour during our stay at Nelson. Rose picked us up at our hotel, where she took us back to her home base and had us quickly briefed and on our way to the first brewery. All three local breweries provided a unique and different approach towards the craft of beer making. The tastings were plentiful and all staff very hospitable and accommodating. I love cider and my husband LOVES beer, and both our needs were well catered for. All ran smoothly and we both found this to be a fun and tasty way to fill a day while staying in Nelson.

We hired bikes for the afternoon, to have a look at the vineyards & local area. We were given excellent information on the route we were to take & given a map of the surrounding area. We found the beautiful, but small Fossil Ridge vineyard, a bit of a hike up a gentle incline but well worth it. The bikes were excellent, & very well maintained. I would definitely recommend you add The Gentle Cycling Company to your itinerary whilst in Nelson.
