Lovely, clean b and b in quiet area yet within walking distance of Nelson. Tasty continental breakfast provided by pleasant and helpful owners. Lots of places to eat in Nelson. Walked up nearby Botanic Hill which is supposedly the 'centre of New Zealand' with fantastic views of Nelson and surrounding area.

The Sussex House is a beautiful old B & B. It's within walking distance to shopping, restaurants, botanical gardens and various walking paths around town. We were there for less than 24 hours, but the breakfast was nice and there was coffee and tea service upstairs. We could here people in the next room a bit. A lovely old house.

Sussex House is located on the banks of the river, by a bridge and within easy walk to the town centre. It's in a quiet area, and Queen's Park nearby is pretty park. We had an en-suite room with access to the verandah, so it was lovely to sit in the sun enjoying a drink, and looking out over the town.
We could make drinks from the well stocked sideboard on the landing, but the complimentary carafe of port in our room was somewhat wasted on us, as neither of us drink it.: a little feature that illustrates what other people have described as 'old fashioned'. David and Vikki are very attentive, and David airs his views readily: if you prefer a more 'distant' host you might feel a bit overwhelmed.
Breakfasts were typical of what we had elsewhere in NZ, and the warm croissants were a nice touch.
The geographical centre of NZ is about 5 minutes walk away, and has great views over Nelson, and well worth the climb.

Beautiful old house near botanical gardens, CBD and hilltop climb. Easy walk to restaurants and town. Nice continental breakfast - no hot food but great baked goods and even had gluten free bread for me. Lovely homemade yougurt (a staple in NZ I think!). Could hear a bit from room next to ours, esp. in bathroom - a tad unsettling if not really disturbing. Didn't have much interaction with hosts but our various taxi drivers to and from bus station and airport were terrific (great train/bus up from Kaikoura) and had lots of suggestions. No wi-fi but a computer all guests could use.

We stayed for 1 night and had the room with seperate bathroom (it was down the hall, not shared and robes were provided - so not a problem at all for 1 night). The house is old and furnished in keeping so very charming. Tea/coffee/ fridge all available, breakfast was a not cooked but lots of choice on fruit, cereals, breads, etc. Weather was very ppor for us (rain and cool) but even so we really liked Sussex house and Nelson. Town center is 5 mins walk away. As is often the case in NZ, the host (david) liked to talk to you breakfast and express his views - which might not suit everyone. Website gave good impression

Comfortable and spacious room with balcony in traditional style house, located next to the river a short walk from the main streets of Nelson. Conviently located to explore Nelson and close to several interesting walks. Nelson is an attractive town and makes a good base to explore the National parks and local beaches

I stayed 2 nights at this B&B in Nov 09. I picked it out from the lonely planet and I dialed the number. Vicki who answered told me that they could not provide me with the same room for the 2 days. Even though I had some reservations about possible inconveniences, I agree to it as I did not want to continue looking for other possible places to stay. Boy, was I wrong! My changing of rooms the next day was carried out so swiftly and posed no inconvenience. Both rooms were lovely. The bathrooms, one ensuite and one just two door away was spotless and clean and warm, The beds were both comfortable and I just love the tea and cookies that were available just outside both rooms. Breakfast was heavenly (You must have the croissants) and in good company. The guest lounge with the free internet is really handy for me to get my emails and get in touch with friends and family. What's lovely is that there is always music playing. This B&B is peaceful and quiet and is just perfect for sitting on the verandah, relaxing and reading. Thank you, Vicki and David for your hospitality. I had a wonderful stay!
