Having heard how wonderful Nelson is I looked forward to being there for a couple of days to explore the city galleries, boutiques, market and cafes.. We didnt want to drive so walking was the plan.. The website doesnt make it obvious that this hotel is so far away from the city centre and is located in a boring suburb quite a walk to the even more boring shopping centre. . The reception was anything but warm, (which would have made up for the location a little). The self contained unit was very comfortable and overlooked a grassy courtyard surrounded by other units (empty). However, the decor looked like it was made for grandma - Very flowery. Quality fittings but a bit kitch. We did however enjoy the restaurant - that was the best part and are sorry we missed the high tea.

We booked this based on favorable reviews. It was quite expensive compared to most of our other hotel staly in NZ, approx $US 150/night.

After staying there and seeing some other options I would not return. The location is isolated. Although it is near the walking/biking trail accessing Nelson, it is 8 km to the city center on this trail. There are no stores or groceries nearby. The internet is not free, and it did not work in our room. There is a single internet kiosk in the reception, also not free. We made a single local phone call from our room, and was charged $6. There was no notice in the room or on the phone that local calls were chargeable. We had several small cockroaches/silverfish around the kitchen sink.

We were "upgraded" to a 2 bedroom unit, which had 2 bedrooms and 2 tiny bathrooms, all upstairs. Downstairs was a small kitchen and a living room. The TV had approx 7 channels, one was Sky movies, and 3 were local NZ channels. They did have CNN for news. There was a DVD player as well which we did not use.

On the positive side, they did have a washing machine in the apartment. No dryer in the apartment, but there was a coin operated dryer in the clubhouse. There was a outdoor pool as well, which would be nice in the summer.

I am certain you can find better values much closer to Nelson city center.

I wanted to add my two cents in here.
We recently attended a conference at Monaco Hotel & Resort or Grand Mercure Nelson Monaco Apartments. (I notice there are two entries, and they are the same place.)
The website touts it as “The Best Hotel in New Zealand”, based on awards they’d won. But the fact that it ranks 10 out of 49 hotels in Nelson on TripAdvisor – behind several motor lodges – does give one pause.
At any rate, we went for the conference.

The surroundings are absolutely exquisite; built with integrity and beauty; built to last. I just love that, far more than temporary gib & plywood structures that have been generated with just an eye on the bottom line. I loved the heavy oak door in our hotel room, the windows, the roses up the walls, the character.

However, the management of the place really lets it down.
The staff are clearly overloaded and trying their very best. But alas, that cannot make up for being understaffed and under-planned.
They were clearly under-prepared for a conference of our size, to the extent that they ran out of plates for breakfast and there was a 15 minute wait for clean ones.
And that is not the only niggle of its sort.

We arrived early and planned to work out and shower before the conference start. However, the gym was small and had no shower - so that killed that idea, as our rooms weren't ready before 2:00pm The photos of the pool on the website make it look as though it's indoor, but it's not. It's outdoor and was 20 degrees.

The internet cord for our room was behind the bedside table, too far for me to work using Internet at the desk. The staff suggested I might like to work on the bed, but when I said that wasn’t acceptable they gave me a wireless hub to plug in. Then the only available power plug was on the other side of the room, so the wireless unit was stretched between the two. Never mind. It worked; but not brilliant for a hotel room in which to conduct any business.

The other example that stands out in my mind of poor management is the tea & coffee lounge for guests, which is advertised as an amenity for hotel guests. It’s in a small corner, which is fine, given space restrictions. However, there is no excuse for having not one but two dirty teapots on offer, no milk and only one (sticky) spoon. Any hotel that bills itself as “luxury” needs to have staff looking after the advertised amenities.
And staff should be trained to treat every enquiry with grace, as “no problem, it’s our pleasure” – if you’re go to go for luxury billing and advertise yourself as “The Best Hotel in New Zealand”.

It’s a shame. The architecture and setting make the buildings a jewel, and with good management, this place could really shine.

We stayed here for 3 nights in a 1 bedroom luxury spa cottage. We were very impressed. All of the rooms were imaculate with lovely pieces of furniture and a little stream running past the patio. The bathroom was large with a spa and the bedroom was also roomy with a large bed. All fittings and decorations were to a very high standard. I had reservations when I booked this hotel about how close it was to the airport but I needn't have worried. Yes the planes are close when they land but they are not large planes, not particularly frequent and we certainly never heard them in the evening. We had a good meal in the hotel restaurant one evening and the staff were very charming and helpful. My only criticism of the resort was that we were not informed on arrival the the hotel had a Spa so it went unused. There was also an error with our bill which only came apparent when I returned to the UK to find I had been charged twice for something. Credit to the staff though as the problem wasn't questioned and was rectified immediately.
I would thoroughly recommend a sea kyacking trip through the Abel Tasman.
