“Adequate, different but not my cup of tea”

We had a two bedroom apartment in this resort for 2 nights.

The resort is set out with stylised english country joined cottages which may appeal to some. My wife and mother thought it was quaint, however I didn't really appreciate it.

The doors are made rustic style witrh iron latches. They make a loud noise any time they are used.

It was quite windy whilst we there and the bedrooms had a lot of subsequent wind noise. You do hear the planes at 6 in the morning but that didn't really worry me too much.

The lighting downstairs was made to go with the style, but I found it very dark.

It is a fair way from the centre of Nelson and there is not too much close. However, Nelson seems fairly spreadout anyway so I am not sure that this would make much of a difference.

Previous reviewers have mentioned the Honest Lawyer opposite hoever it did not overly appeal to us and we ate on site one night. The restaurant and service were fine.

This is a hidden gem. The hotel is actually condos which are for sale. They are very large including a living area and kitchen. Highly recommend the facility although it is difficult to find. Nice restaruant on site.

We stayed in a 1 bedroom spa apartment. Very spacious, had an old English country feel. Beautiful wooden furniture, fireplace, courtyard onto canal with ducks, four poster bed in bedroom and great spa in the large bathroom. Very quiet at night. A bit out of the way if you wanted to go out to Nelson for dinner. The restaurant in the hotel had a great view over the water and excellent food and wine. If you didn't want to eat in the hotel restaurant there is a pub across the road which has received good reviews.

Had a room service breakfast in the morning, very generous servings though as usual in these type of hotels not particularly cheap. If you wanted to spoil yourself and have a romantic evening with a lovely room and an enjoyable dinner this would fit the bill. Would stay here again if I was in Nelson.

Go to the web and you'll read that this is in theoir own words New Zealand's best hotel. It appea5rs to be hanging over the harbour in Nelson when in reality it is 8ks from Nelson, with a road between it and the mudflats. The highway backs the property and the airport runway ends half as mile away.
The restaurant is quite excellent, but the promotion of the hotel is a joke. Room did not have a fridge and were not air conditioned. The hotel looks great and cannot back up that first impression

Be aware that the actual hotel rooms at the front of the complex near the restaurant and reception are very small and dark; we had to have the light on at all times of the day. You share a fridge and tea and coffe making facilities with other rooms , located in the hallway. Our room backed onto the restaurant and was quite noisy.
Getting to the hotel is tricky as you need to navigate a certain way around the motorway - this helpful piece of information was shown us by a girl at the Tourist Centre in Nelson. It is quite a way out of town - don't eat at the hotel, try the Honest Lawyer over the road - better atmosphere and value.

Let's start with the good. The hotel is constructed on the basis of an English village complete with streets and a village green. It's brilliantly done and very effective. We were on High Street and were able to have our morning coffee outside overlooking the green. Our unit was clean, comfortable and spacious. Our fridge went off, maintenance was there in minutes; they pulled it and replaced it immediately. Staff were helpful and attentive. If I marked Mercure at this point it would be in the excellent range.
But let's do the bad. Look above and you will see we are reviewing the Grand Mercure Nelson. The truth is that it's nowhere near Nelson ( my measure of near is if you can walk to it in an hour). It's not in Richmond either, it's in a place called Stoke. It's immediate neighbours are some sea or mudflats, depending on the tide, a pub across the street and the airport. It's in the middle of nowhere. You can't even easily walk into Stoke to get a few groceries, you have to drive. And you had better have a good map to find the place or you'll be going up and down the highway trying to figure out how to get there.
There is a shuttle to Nelson but it stops at around four in the afternoon. You are pretty much stuck with the on-site restaurant, the Orangerie (expensive and pretentious) or the pub (pub-like and mediocre). The hotel can accommodate hundreds. The pool is small and has four loungers. Imagine say fifty turning up for a swim, only four can lay out in the sun and the rest would be in the water like sardines.
In summary, there are brilliant aspects to the Mercure. if you want peace, quiet and being out in the middle of nowhere, on your own, then you willl love it. If you like a beach, a boardwalk, an easy walk to town, shops, people and some energy and enthusiasm then stay well away.
