We stayed here one night on an Air New Zealand Escape Weekend.

To be honest we were quite disappointed with the room. It was quite old and tired. The rooms while quite spacious, they were quite dark and cold - very little natural light coming in.

We traveled last month in the middle of winter and was disappointed that they failed to turn on the heating, so the room was very cold when we arrived (which was prepaid).

Lots of little things which I feel need to be addressed
- cupboards that would not shut
- only full blue milk available in the bottle
- Moconna coffee was only decaffeinated (which is good if you like decaf.)
- TV reception so bad on some channels it was unwatchable, I could not watch the rugby replays on TV it was just too unclear
- TV very small in both lounge and bedroom, so small in the bedroom it was unwatchable when in bed.

When we checked in, given an upstairs room not even asked if we would like ground floor or not.

The stairs leading to the room were very steep & narrow. The landing outside the two upstairs doors was very small, for person + baggage. The doors opened OUTWARDS on the landing, which threw me and was quite unsafe because you had to back up in this small area, and step around the door close to those steep stairs.

As an aside, it is also well out of Nelson City, so you need to drive to see the sights.

Room Tip: I would choose another place if it was me

Hi there Stephen

Thank you for your detailed review/feedback following your recent stay with us.

I do sincerely hope that despite the issues you mention, that you still managed to enjoy your Weekend Escape to the Nelson/Tasman region.

I have shared your review with the wider team here at the Grand Mercure Nelson Monaco, and have drawn their attention to the things that most definitely should have been better. Your room should have had the heating on when you arrived, your room should have had a choice of coffee (not just decaf), the TV tuning should have been been working, and the cupboard doors are supposed to all close! Unfortunately, we've failed to live up to our own service standards, and for that I offer our sincere apologies. (I do hope you filled out one of our maintenance cards in the room drawing the tv tuning and cupboard doors to the attention of our maintenance team).

Your issue with the landing area outside your accommodation entrance is not one that has been mentioned before, but it is noted.

Our 4.5 star rating is awarded to us by QualMark New Zealand - an independent quality assessment organisation which assesses the hotel on an annual basis.

Once again, we do appreciate hearing from guests, so that we might continually improve.

Warm regards
Nick

Amazing venue / awesome rooms well heated up, excellent customer service / location next to lake with amazing views, great selection of Room Service Menu , a very good place to chill for the night or party all night

Room Tip: Studio Apartments or Villas (2 bedroom) ones are excellent and very easy to upgrade at next to nothing

found the rooms quite dark and dingy and cold... took a while to heat up. The rooms were very spacious though but the beds should have electric blankets. Handy to the Honest Lawyer where its better to eat and drink

Hi there Stormpipes

Thanks for your feedback/review - I was disappoint to read that you found your hotel accommodation dark, dingy and cold - this is definitely not the impression we want to leave in our guests minds, quite the opposite!

I was pleased to read that you thought the room spacious, these days its most unusual for hotels (especially a 4-star+ hotel like ours) to provide electric blankets on beds due to health and safety and hygiene reasons. Some motels provide electric blankets, but even then, many motels have have moved away from providing them.

Our restaurant, The Monaco Kitchen is also an excellent dining option for breakfast and evening meals, and of course we offer full charge back facility. We also offer a packed lunch service, and pre-packed breakfasts for guests to cook breakfast in their rooms (studios and cottages with kitchen facilities).

Warm regards
Nick

This whole hotel is simply beautiful and unique! We cannot recommend it enough. You don't even feel like you're in a hotel, more a home away from home. The restaurant is gorgeous, the staff are always so genuinely lovely and the food is amazing!! Not to mention the sea views right outside your door are incredible.
Everything is extremely well priced. After experiencing the atmosphere, customer service and amenities here we would never stay anywhere else. This place is one out of the box!
Thank you to all the lovely staff (Tommy and team) who made our stay and dinner so enjoyable and gave us a laugh. See you next time!

Hi alicendean

Thanks so much for your review/feedback - I was delighted to read your comments.

A home away from home is the sort of guest response we strive for; we're equally pleased that you really enjoyed your dining experience at The Monaco Kitchen, I've passed your comments on to Tommy and the wider team in the hotel and restaurant.

We look forward to welcoming you back again to your new home away from home in Nelson!

Warm regards

We came down from Auckland as a family and decided to stay here as it was Accor Hotels. We got the apartment with two bedrooms and we were not disappointed. Except for the fridge, which smelled HORRIBLE. But The staff were friendly and fixed the problem. The restaurant was good but pricey. The gym has not got a lot of equipment but is enough for a gym of that size. The swimming pool is not heated but is a good size. The whole complex itself almost feels like a village, with jewelers and a barber and a nice village green it is a really nice place to stay. The bicycle hire is affordable and Nelson with its bike trails is quite a nice place to cycle. Overall with comfy rooms, friendly staff and good facilities although a few things need work, I would recommend anyone to stay here. Families, couples or business travelers would enjoy a stay here.

Room Tip: The RIverside Cottages Are Comfortable, with a good view of the bush and a small stream.

Thanks sam04946FD for your review/feedback.

It was lovely to read that you and your family enjoyed your stay with us, thanks for your very comprehensive review of the facilities available at the Grand Mercure Nelson Monaco.

My apologies for the offending fridge, but I was pleased to read that our staff sorted that problem to your satisfaction; thanks for your endorsement/recommendation of the hotel as a great place to stay in Nelson.

Just one thing to note, as far as I know the hairdressing salon (pointsixhair) does not offer barber services (eg. men's shaves), they do offer hair cuts for both men and women.

Warm regards
