“home far away from home”
Reviewed September 7, 2009

It has been a very pleasant stay for us. We were welcome with our very active five year old and looked after (extra bed for him) warmly. Breakfast was exellent and so was the chocolate pudding desert. It was a bit like being home far away from home, which longterm travellers somethimes need to charge up on energy again, especially in cold weather.

This place was just the best. Felt so comfortable, relaxed. Didn't feel out of place at all.

Tasman Bay Backpackers has been one of the best hostels I've stayed in. The people who worked there were really friendly and helpful and answered all my questions. The small things made this hostel special: the free DELICIOUS hot chocolate pudding, free breakfast in the morning (and not just cheap toast, but fresh bread, buns, different kinds of cereals, milk, tea, coffee etc.), the hot water bottles you could use on cold nights, the fire in the living room, the lights in the garden and the wise/funny quotes hanging on the walls.

The atmosphere was very relaxed, especially around 8 o clock when the chocolate pudding was being served: everybody would just sit in the living room and chat with each other.

I stayed in a dorm room, which was really basic but a decent room. The showers were awesome and are very clean, and so are the toilets.

What would I change about this hostel? Not much to be honest! The rooms are quite basic and can use a bit of decoration, though, and the internet is a bit slow. But apart from this Tasman Bay is an excellent hostel with a great atmosphere and excellent service.

My stay in here was pleasant and firendly. Thanks to the Abel Tasman coach dirver who recommended to stay here.
The manangers are friendly and ready to help. In case of need they will going to find out the best solution depending the situation.
I liked the room where i slept even though that the mattresses is very soft, the room is like a home room and not just a dorm.
I meet nice people here.
Thanks for the nice chocolate pudding and ice cream!

I've been traveling around NZ for a month now and have been fortunate to have stayed in nice hostels. Tasmas is definitely one of my favorites. It seems a bit far from town center but it's not really. Maybe a 10 min. walk over the footbridge. But it is closer to Fresh Choice (supermarket) than the other hostels. It's clean, great staff, and cute place. And, free ice cream and pudding every night at 8 pm! I really enjoyed it. Bathroom/showers were fine and beds were fine too. Only thing missing is that there is no TV at the hostel at all but you're not really there to watch TV, are you?? Would recommend it if you are staying in Nelson for a couple of days! it's also very quiet, getting sleep here is not a problem as it is sort of in a residential area.

Picked this one out of one of the typical booklets for hostels around New Zealand. And it was one of the best picks!

Firstly: If you are looking for a party hostel, this is the wrong place to stay! Which is what I loved about it. It has a friendly atmosphere, plenty of space in living room, kitchen, frontyard. There are games you can play with anyone you meet - no tv though (for all the couch potatoes).

There are single showers (no big shower room), all facilities clean and well cared for. Different types of rooms with friendly interieor.

In short: You can see that this hostel is run by a couple that has travelled a lot. They put pictures of their own journeys at the walls and everything has been thought out well.

Only downside is that it is one of the few hostels in Nelson not situated close to the city center. Which means it is far away from party places (nice if you like sleeping) but also not that close to all other "amenities". If you do not mind walking a few mins this is the place to stay in Nelson!!!

  • Liked — Quiet, friendly staff, clean, well thought out
  • Disliked — If anything - not very close to the city center
