I usually find the imperfections in hostels, but I loved this one. Very homey feel, free unlimited wifi (though it did get overloaded at certain times of day), and free dessert/breakfast! Rooms were also very nice and clean. Location not perfect, but the walk into town is actually quite nice. Very reasonable price for private room! Staff was great as well.

We were looking forward to this Hostel as a highlight on our trip through New Zealand. It is clean and quiet. The room (6-bed-dorm) is not what we expected. It is way too small for the luggage of 6 people and when you get up to the top bunk, you almost get stuck between the bed and the wall. The mattresses are the worst we slept on so far and we stayed at various hostels throughout the country. It felt like sleeping on the bed frame.
The first day we arrived, food got stolen from the fridge because the door to the building doesn't have a lock which means everyone can just walk in.
Now, this hostel is clean and taken care of and the chocolate cake every night is really good (but you won't get anything if you're just 10 minutes late), however, our experience there wasn't all that good. We are a couple, two girls, we were having dinner and so was the guy next to us. We kissed, short and innocent. It was a peck on the lips when the guy got up, muttered something and left the room to eat somewhere else. When we were in the kitchen to clean up, he all of a sudden stood right behind us and started insulting us, dropping homophobic comments. My girlfriend was really upset and had to leave. The kitchen was full of people. NOBODY said anything! Nobody cared. I told the manager what had happened, he said he'd take care of it but he didn't do anything either. He saw that we were clearly upset but didn't feel the need to do anything about it at all. We even assume that he works there as well. So if you can't imagine what it feels like to be discriminated against based on your sexuality then let me tell you it first of all hurts and it is astonishing how little people care. Tasman bay seems to be a "homely" place to stay for people who like the opposite sex. If you happen to be gay and travelling through new Zealand, I'd suggest you don't stay here.

We were really surprised and sad to hear of the reaction you got from another guest at our hostel when you and your partner showed some affection. This situation being a first for us meant our Manager was also unsure what would be a good thing to do that would be helpful to you both. It is sad as our values are strongly that people of all different ages, nationalities, cultures, sexual orientations etc feel welcome and respected at our hostel so I am really sorry that this wasn’t the case for you both.
Re the 6 share dorm. We offer a range of different accommodation at different prices with our 6 share being the cheapest option. Many people find the $26 ($23 BBH) for the night including the chocolate pudding and ice cream and unlimited wifi to be good value. If inner strung mattresses and more space are important to you, then other rooms have that for a little more $.
We appreciate your feedback and it has made for some thoughtful discussions about how to respond to this situation in future. Enjoy your travels in other parts of NZ.

I have been travelling a lot between Australia and New Zealand and it's not always easy to find a good place to stay, but Tasman Bay backpackers is definitely the place to be! Everything is just perfect from the pick up at the bus station till the check out. Nice and spacious kitchen with all you need, nice and cozy lounge, dining area, the rooms are awesome, spacious, clean. Very good atmosphere in this hostel and very friendly staff. They help you with organizing your trip to Abel Tasman you can rent some gear (sleeping bag, mat....), you can leave your bags in storage while you are away. Ohhhhh and the free breakfast!!! I have never seen that before! just an amazing breakfast with different Cereal choices, fresh bread, different jams....an awesome place where i would definitely go back!!!

I have been travelling for a while and this is one of the best hostels I've stayed at. It has a very good atmosphere with a welcoming staff. The kitchen facilities were very good; they provided everything I needed and it was all very clean. The beds were comfortable and my sheets and mattress were clean. There was free internet use and it worked well. There was free breakfast which consisted of cereals, breads, spreads, and coffee and tea, and it was free and is a lot more than you get from other hostels. The chocolate pudding was a nice touch as well. The fireplace was a nice touch for the rained-out days I spent there. It was a little bit of a walk to the town centre, but nothing to complain about at all. Overall, a wonderful, homely place.

We only stayed here 1 night but really wished we could have spent more time here. The free chocolate cake and ice cream at 8pm just showed the attention to detail the owners had for this hostel. They did all the little things and the big things right. The owner also picked us up from the bus station even though we didn't request it. It was REALLY appreciated as the hostel is about a 5-10 minute walk to the main strip. That said, the intercity bus will stop right outside the backpacker if you request it. We didn't request it but the owner was able to change it for us online so we didn't have to drag out bags downtown. AMAZING customer service!! The wifi is free which is a rarity in NZ and it worked very well. We stayed in a private room and it was quite comfortable. The kitchen is clean and well stocked and we enjoyed the free breakfast in the morning (toast, oatmeal, cereal etc). We used the laundry facilities without any issues. Note that they do request the dryer cycle be completed by 10pm as it can get noisy for some guests in nearby rooms. Not a criticism, just information for those thinking of using it in the evening. We didn't use the lounge but it looked comfortable. It was a bit loud in the evening but someone eventually told them to be quiet and we didn't have any issues after this. The bathrooms and showers are clean and warm and even though the place was busy we never waited to use the facilities. We loved our stayed here and would encourage everyone to seek this place out. I challenge you to find a backpacker as good as this one in Nelson!

Free chocolate cake and ice cream at 8pm each night says it all in terms of friendliness. Comfy beds, 100% kiwi music in the background but not to loud you can't talk to others. The whole place had a big shared house feel to it which is how it should be in my opinion. Free breakfast in the morning, toast, cereals and tea / coffee. The bread was actually a selection of different types and not just sliced white or brown. If I had to pick a fault it would be it's a little bit of a walk from the centre of town, but worth the effort.

All said, a great place to stay.
