“abandoned stay”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 25, 2013

This motel was recommended by the i-site in town but was completely uncontactable. While we waited for about 15 to 20 minutes the i-site desk tried 3 times to ring the motel with no luck. As it seemed easy to find we drove up the hill to book in. It looked totally abandoned with no one in sight. We walked around a bit and into the next building but still no luck. We waited a while in the car but gave up eventually and went elsewhere. Not a good way to run a business.

Room Tip: Good luck!!

I'm a bit bewildered by the poor reviews for this place. It's my favourite stay in New Zealand so far, and we've covered a fair bit of ground. It looks a bit like an abandoned asylum on the outside, but inside is a completely different story - really tasteful decor, clean and comfortable rooms and a nice atmosphere. Our room had a beautiful ensuite bathroom and a great view across town. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful from start to finish. We really enjoyed our short time in Oamaru and that had a lot to do with this great motel. We'll be staying here again for sure.

While the views are great and the staff (the young man and girl) are most friendly and helpful, I have to agree that the beds are torture. Overall, the rooms are spacious, bathroom modern and tidy and those bed side lamps, well.....unique. The rooms are tidy but there was this smell in the duvet that gave away the fact that it had probably been in storage for a while. It was nice of the staff to let us use the kitchen facilities to prepare our tea, however, if the management is willing to make the kitchen a public space, then a HUGE EFFORT needs to be made on basic hygene. There was a piece of meat thawing in the kitchen sink with a pool of blood, dishes had not been done for a while (a mug of unfinished milo was showing signs of "growth"), the whole place was untidy and seemed like an asian shop. Another puzzling thing was that we made our booking through the Oamaru i-site and were offered a very large room at a high prize. We accepted thinking it was the only option. Upon getting there, the motel was almost empty and we realized that there were other options that could have suited out needs at a lower cost. We felt a bit abused.
In a nut shell: go for it if you don't mind sleeping in a very hard bed and for your health's sake, don't use their kitchen facilities, as they clearly do not meet health and safety standards.

Room Tip: Make sure you specify your room requirements so that you are offered what you need, not what the man...

We found this place by chance having arrived in Oamaru without booking.
We were pleasantly surprised and had a very calm night, though the bed was a bit hard. It was delightful to wake in the morning to the sheep baaing and the sun rising from the ocean.
The lights in the rooms were the highlight for us.After we had left we received a phone call to tell us we had left our phone charger behind, luckily we were still in Oamaru and were able to collect it. This was excellent service.

Room Tip: If you are lucky you will be able to look around the whole place and select the room you like best.W...

We were traveling in a large group of 10 people from 3 families, at the end of our road trip across the South Island of New Zealand. Oamaru was our last stop and we didn't know quite what t expect from this place which I had booked through Booking.com

As it turned out, we were pleasantly surprised with the place! The rooms were big and well appointed with very comfortable beds. The bathrooms seemed to have been newly renovated and was clean and well appointed.

The 2 rooms that we used, each had accommodation for 5 people and you would expect that to be a mess. Not so!! We had enough space for everyone and as a bonus the rooms had great view of the coast down below (the motel is situated on the top of a hill, affording very nice views of the town and the sea).

The young man and his wife who run the place were very nice and cooperative. We even were allowed to use the pipe to water down the cars which were really in bad shape after driving through last day's rains.

In the morning, we used the breakfast area and the common kitchen to prepare our toasts and tea/coffee. A definite plus over having to be cramped into your own room!

I would gladly recommend the place to anyone who is traveling on a medium budget. In case you want to cut down on expenses, I saw a backpackers motel by the same name across this one (maybe owned by the same owner?).

The photos do the place justice, when we booked we had no idea it was the old hospital. Once we arrived it had a real unsettling feel about it, but i thought i would give it the benefit of the doubt, however i have never slept in such an uncomfortable bed, it was like sleeping on the floor. unfortuneatly i do not think i will be returning.

Everything perfect. Except for the bed. Solid as a rock. Was sure we slept on the mattress base instead of a mattress. Could even feel the wires from the electric blanket. Awful. I wish I had read the reviews I have now found. Have complained to the hotel and wait to see what they do.

Room Tip: Ask about the beds first..... Sit on one to check!
