We stayed in a double room for NZD70/night in summer. The room was extremely cosy despite being so small it could only accommodate the bed. One of the cosiest hostel rooms I'd every stayed in before. Bathroom is shared but clean. Gets a little busy though with just 2 toilet and 2 shower cubicles shared amongst the entire level. Shared kitchen is equipped just fine. Location is great. 5 minutes drive from blue penguin colony. Beside the i-site. Free public parking available behind the hostel.

We showed up late after the office had closed but it wasn't a problem. Gave us private rooms for the price of dorms on account of the bad weather that forced is off the road. Great place and excellent staff. Awesome fire place!

Very well located, right in the city center. Very nice and cosy common places. Free WIFI and computers.
Our room, a double one, was clean but it was extremely small, without even a table.
I would go there again.

Fantastic backpackers run by the delightful Maureen and Tigger the cat. Great central location, 2 well-equipped kitchens, cosy sitting room with a log fire, free wifi and if you're lucky you might even see some blue penguins nesting in the garage out the back!

The Empire is right in the centre of town and only a short walk from the penguins, so a very good location.

Our twin room was small but the beds were very comfortable and it was good value - cheaper than some dorms we'd stayed in.

The bathroom was nice but didn't really have enough showers given the size of the hostel.

There are two kitchens so there's no problem with space to cook, and both were very clean.

Free internet (although a bit slow) is a definite bonus, and the TV lounge was nice and cosy.

Nice hotel, free internet, cosy kitchen and living room, very clean rooms and friendly staff. They'll show you the way to the beaches where you can see the pinguins coming home.

The Empire is in a great location, just around the corner from the gorgeous historial disctrict of Oamaru (make sure you take a wander down the lane ways in the morning when the shops and galleries are open). There is also a bakery cafe next door, and a supermarket/post office down the main street a bit. It's about a twenty minute walk to the penguin viewing area.

The rooms were small and very basic, and I didn't really like the pillows, but for $50 NZD I can't complain. It felt safe and quiet and that's all you really need in a hostel for one night!

Make sure you bring your own towels as these are not available.
