Smooth attention to detail and process to ensure all goes well. Special touches that will remain in our memory. Proudly introducing us to the best of what Oamaru can offer...our hosts rewrote my view of what is the best of the "Mainland". The territory of James II - The formal garden was a delight; the vegetable garden sets the standard for what I will aspire to. The territory of James I - Dining was a culinary adventure - full of surprises - the type I like...with personal involvement/creativity/design/study...fantastic. We will absolutely return again and again to the understated natural luxury which is Pen-y-bryn.

What a wonderful treat we had this week as guests at Pen-y-bryn Luxury Lodge in Oamaru.
The beautiful and historical estate is a real gem. Elegant rooms with beautiful wood panels, precious antique pieces from different parts of the world decorate this amazing building.
A warm fireplace is light every night before dinner…delicious canapés
transported us to North Africa followed by a delicious dinner using local products and delivered by the Chef James finishing with arancello liqueur made at the lodge.
Breakfast was even more surprising with fresh croissants equal to the best French patisserie, bagels bombs accompanied by salmon marinated in a rare tea infusion, lodge made jams galore. If you love food Pen-y-bryn is a must in your itinerary in the South Island.
But…wait there is more: if you are like me - a food explorer and also a keen gardener - you need to come here.
The varieties of bulbs, roses (around 100) and bushes are amazing…a joy to the eyes.
The white cherry trees were in full blossom. James the Gardner has done an amazing job taking care of this historic garden…the colours, the shapes, the balance of plants is exquisite. James also created a fantastic vegetable garden - planting vegetables that I never knew...of course James the first (the Chef) has fantastic fresh lodge grown ingredients to create his delicious dishes.
Oamaru was a surprise with the Victorian streets, elegant building testimonial of what Oamaru once was…and the Blue Penguins colony is an overwhelming experience.
Thank you so much James and James we had a great time and a fantastic wedding anniversary that we will never forget…including the NZ SteamPunk town and of course the adoption of Penny the Penguin from Pen-y-bryn.

Thank you for your very effusive review! We are thrilled to have guests who appreciate the efforts that we go to to make a stay with us something special, whether it be the little treats we prepare in the kitchen, or the ones that await visitors in the garden or the lodge buildings themselves. We also are very happy that you enjoyed the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony, and your complimentary "penguin adoption"!

We hope to have the chance to treat you to more little gems on a future visit!

What an asset to Oamaru Pen-y-bryn Lodge is. The lodge is a destination in itself and the house is of historical and architectural importance, offering exclusive heritage accommodation.

The property is the perfect combination of history and luxury without being pretentious. What really sets this place apart is the personal touch your hosts James Glucksman and James Boussy owners of Pen-y-bryn are the consummate gentlemen who create the perfect balance of genuine caring service. There is certainly no doubting the wonderfully grand feeling of the Lodge, but at the same time we were made to feel immediately at home.

I was fortunate enough to arrive early in the afternoon and attended one of the lodges cooking classes and learnt the art of croissant making and enjoyed both the experience and meeting some of the locals who were in attendance.

My suite, the Victoria Room which overlooked the Oamaru stone terrace and gardens was spacious and exceptionally comfortable, and was characterised by antique oak furnishings. The bed was extremely comfortable and came with a full range of quality New Zealand modern amenities.

Guests are encouraged to make use of the many private rooms within the lodge and we were lucky enough as both owners have spent considerable time in China to experience a Chinese tea ceremony. This is a completely different way to drink tea steeped in tradition and I won't spoil the surprise, "if you stay at Pen-y-bryn you simply must ask your hosts and experience this".

Leisure activities were organised without fuss we took in a dusk visit to the Oamaru Penguin Colony which is a 'must do' when visiting. We returned to canapes and cocktails by the fire and the food was amazing and much grown out of their garden, the wines were matched to the food and the knowledge of the hosts was fantastic.

Owners James and James have an eye for detail and are lovingly dedicated to continue refurbishing the lodge. We would highly recommend this incredibly beautiful former home that is now a small luxury lodge.

Thanks, Andy, for taking the time to write such a long and glowing review of your visit with us! We had a family get together at Penybryn last week and had the lodge to ourselves. It was 2 nights of being totally looked after by the genuinely lovely James'. The James' were delightful - thoughtful, helpful, humourous and courteous. We had 2 birthdays amongst our group and both the birthday people were made to feel very special with birthday wishes and cakes to suit. Our children LOVED the billiards table and the Wanaka v Christchurch snooker game was a lot of fun. The beds and linen were very comfortable and the dinners exceptional. The homemade muesli, jams, croissants, muffins, popovers (?) made for a delicious breakfast. The lodge is beautifully decorated and the James' array of international artifacts are very interesting. Penybryn was the ideal place for our gathering and we would highly recommend it to other parties thinking of hiring the whole lodge for a group of family or friends.

Exceptional attention to detail. One of the rare places in the world where you can have Medlar Jelly with home made croissants for breakfast, truly delicious.
A superb find in Omaru, quite unexpected and delightful.
The 2 James' where exceptional hosts, advising on penguin trips and local restaurants, amongst other things.
Their home/Lodge is a exquisite place, not many places left like this, restoration attention superb, hand made soap and lotions, and a hot water bottle in a turned down bed complete with Victorian bed linen- sheer bliss.
Thank you so much for a restful stay.

My fiancé and I recently stayed at Pen-Y-Bryn Lodge for a getaway weekend. We were absolutely blown away by the level of service, quality of accommodation, friendliness and helpfulness of our hosts. James and James were fabulous hosts. They are extremely well travelled (not to mention fluency in 8 languages!). James are a top quality chef to boot and we sat down to a personalised menu of fine dining comparable to any high end restaurant we've frequented around the world. I cannot recommend Pen-Y-Bryn highly enough. The house has been renovated to the point where you feel as though you've stepped back in time and live the life of the wealthy a century and a half ago. This is a must visit if you are anywhere near the lower South Island.
