We recently stayed at the hotel and had a very pleasant stay. We were to stay in a double room however were upgraded to a very large family room in the older section of the hotel. The room was very modern and extremely clean. If you stay here grab a meal across the road at Fat Sally's it is an exceptional restuarant. Nice hotel close to the centre of town and the historic section.

We went to Oamaru to see the penguins. Having been to Oamaru before, we wanted to stay in the centre rather than out on the main road in, which is full of motels. The i-site booked us a room here (forgetting to tell us that they charge a $10 booking fee). The only twins were the superior rooms which are in the newer rear part of the hotel. The standard rooms in the old part had huge height ceilings but looked very basic. Our room had tea making facilities, bath/shower tv and electric blankets.
We didn't eat here, so can't comment on food.
After visiting the penguins, we drove back to hotel and went looking for a shop to buy a bottle of wine. 10pm and Oamaru was shut! Not a single person on the streets and no shops open.
Hotel is well placed for walking around the town, with some impressive looking buildings on show.

My wife and I spent one night here as part of a three week tour of NZ. The hotels were booked and paid as part of the package - so we can't comment on individual value.

Oamaru is a surprising place. There's a wide prosperous main street in which the hotel is situated. The town has a number of very attractive restored buildings and they are also working hard at restoring the victorian area as a tourist attraction - it's a work in progress at the moment but they're making good progress. The back of the hotel where the (free) car park is, seems to be a more commercial area. There's also a railway line and a sea wall. Access to the sea from the town seemed limited therefore. I don't know if the railway is used but we weren't disturbed by train noise in the hotel.

It was pouring with rain when we were there but we still enjoyed our visit.

Initially we were rather nervous when we entered the hotel. It's an older building albeit with a more modern extension to the rear. The reception area is dated - but the staff were very friendly, efficient and helpful.

We had a room in the old part of the hotel. The corridors and stairs are looking a bit tired and could do with a refresh. And the lft is very small, old and slow.

But the room itself was lovely. Carefully and sympathetically refurbished, it retained the old high ceiling and feelings of spaciousness with modern furniture, lighting and comfort. En suite was very nice and modern - albeit a little narrow - and well equipped. Minor niggle - our tap was loose.

The choice of TV channels was limited and there was no wifi. There were some terminals you could pay to use in reception.

We slept well and were very comfortable. In the evening we ate at a pizzeria just down the street but had breakfast in the hotel. The dining room was again sympathetically and well modernised while retaining the heritage features.

We enjoyed our night here. It was nice to visit a hotel with character.

My husband and I went to Oamaru in October 2011 for a Golden Oldies Rugby Festival Weekend. This weekend was shared with many old friends and also a lot of new friends. Our team stayed at The Brydone Kingsgate in Oamaru for the weekend. The rom was clean tidy and comfortable. The service was very good. We had our breakfast in the dining room and it was well presented and most enjoyable. Given the chance we would stay here again.

Stayed in an Ensuite Queen unit in the old part of Hotel. It was room two. Is at the non street side so was nice and quite as no traffic noise which often ruins rooms. Very tidy an clean. Staff very friendly and efficient. The room is large and has a very nice ensuite, shower pressue is a little lack lustre but does the job. Would stay again without any hesitation.

As a place to grab a feed and put my head down while on a business trip, Kingsgate Oamaru was great! The staff are friendly, helpful and not corporate robots that you get at some places. The people at reception connected well and made sure I had what I needed. The bar and restaurant meant I didn't have to go around town trying to find somewhere at short notice after arrival. Good one Kingsgate Oamaru!
