Birdlands Wine Company
Price range: $9 - $18
Cuisines: Healthy
Description: Oamaru's finest wine bar, featuring local and South Island wine for tasting, by the glass or bottle sales, and tasty local platters. Tucked away in Oamaru's Historic Precinct, a hidden gem with a relaxed atmosphere, showcasing a great selection of local wine without having to travel to the seperate wineries. Loved by locals!!

This place was a bit of a surprise as I'd never heard of the label before despite having worked in the local wine industry. The atmosphere is ultra casual and the guy running it, Nathan, was very entertaining. The music was chilled and laid back but the wines sadly didn't match the rest of the experience. I thought the pinot noir was slightly oxidised (maybe a bad bottle or been opened too long) the pinot gris was so-so but I really got into the riesling.

We got here about the 'penguin parade' and the place was buzzing with locals and regulars. Try their wine and talk to the owner/bartender/winemaker.

Last night I left The Bus Stop - Kakanui for my first venture into Oamaru to check out the night life. Armed with a local friend who knew the ropes, we ended up at Birdlands. A tiny wine bar located on Oamaru's infamous Victorian themed Harbour Street it was one of the cutest bars I've ever been in. The atmosphere was friendly and welcoming whilst the surroundings were authentic yet current. Sitting at the bar is the thing to do and the delightful bar staff will have a chat and let you know about other things happening in and around Oamaru. Charming, quaint and off the beaten track, it's certainly a place to go whilst in Oamaru. I can definitely recommend the mulled wine!

We stumbled into Birdlands while wandering around the historic Oamaru area and couldn't be more pleased with the find. We spoke with the owner who was happy to show us around the facilities and offered a taste of their pinot noir. Having lived in South America and tasting more than our share of good reds, we were pleasantly surprised with the quality and care put into this delicious wine. We still have a bottle on hand and are waiting for just the right occasion to enjoy it!

This is a lovely little bar/restaurant. Its not open every day but when it is it provides a very relaxed atmosphere in which to drink a little wine and eat a little food. The manager/owner is laid back and knows his wines and beers. You can by the local ales brewed in Oamaru but their speciality is their own organic wines. We sampled a bottle and it was delightful. The local craft beers too are good.
It is situated a bit off the main track but its in the renovated Victorian quarter which is worth a stroll and visit.
These places are a pleasure to visit as you get quality across the board particularly in being able to talk to people who own and manage them.
The night we dropped in there was some local musicians playing...as they should be unobtrusive but a good sound and not too loud!

Well worth a try. We wish we'd had more time to go back.
