My husband and I have been travelling in NZ--both islands--for quite a while now, and have stayed in several motels and have met many owners. But we had to come to Oamaru to find the best place of all: the Midway Motel, owned and operated by Karen and Ken.
Our first experience with Ken was very interesting because he is an excellent conversationalist--we touched on many good topics--and is very accommodating. After he took us personally to our room and got us a bottle of milk for our tea-- a nice touch--we were met by Karen who had a couple of pieces of raisin cake she'd just baked for our tea. What kindness and thoughtfulness! These people care about their clients--which is not always the case with inn-keepers.
As for the hotel as a whole, it's quiet, well cared for and beautifully landscaped. Our room was the best yet: large, spotless, and with a very well equipped kitchenette. For children, there is a swing set and trampoline to keep them occupied.
It's very close to the downtown of Oamaru as well, and the price is just right.
So, all in all, this is a great place to stay. It's the best yet! I would highly recommend it to anybody who wants to stay a night or two in Oamaru.More
