We decided to break up our 5 day city break in Copenhagen by hiring a car and heading out of the city for a day. We probably picked a bad time, mid morning on a very warm Friday. The traffic on the motorway was horrendous. Off the motorway, its a pleasant drive out through Store Heddinge and then a short journey on to the cliffs and old church. i was suprised at how busy the area was. It is a beautiful location, lots of interesting grassed, shaded areas and picnic tables. Kids swam in the baltic sea. Beautiful clifftop walks in either direction from here to a lighthouse. There are lots of other attractions in pm the vicinity. There is also a playground adjacent to Hojerup old church.

Stevns Museum is a good place to start your visit to Stevns Klint. Small but informative, it contains several displays regarding the fish clay layer in the nearby cliffs that are one of the proofs of asteroid that killed the dinosaurs. The staff will also provide you with all the information you need to visit the actual site. Reasonable entrance fee.

I've enjoyed the trip to Stevns Klint very much, drawn to it by the fact it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list just a couple of weeks ago. There's an old church at the top of the site, its balcony offering beautiful views and then you just go down some steep stairs and you're at the rocky beach, free to walk around and enjoy the views. The Stevns museum is a good place to start as it provides all necessary information.

One warning though. As we found out, the site is hard to reach during weekends - the local authorities have probably not really jumped on the UNESCO bandwagon yet. The problem is, the only way to reach Store Heddinge during weekends is by car. We went by train to Koge and from Koge busses go to Store Heddinge from Monday to Friday only. There is, apparently, an afternoon shuttle bus on weekends, we were a bit early for that one, but still, no bus stop indicated in Koge. We had to partly walk and partly hitchhike the 5km route. But it was still worth it.

Stevns Klint is worth a visit, even if a bit out of the way. Visit Højerup Old Church from 1300 (or the remains of the church, as part of it fell into the sea 85 years ago). There is a fantastic view of the sea and limestone mountains from the church. Walk down the steep steps to the beach and see traces from millions of years back. Beautiful surroundings as well.
