Holiday Inn Auckland Airport
Ranked #5 of 23 Hotels in Mangere
Reviewed April 5, 2010

An airport Holiday Inn: you expect efficiency, a comfortable room, corporate blandness and total forgettability. Yet the one at Auckland Airport is positively a very nice hotel, memorable, even the sort of place at which you could have an enjoyable holiday.

It's thirty years old or so, but yet very new. It must have been built in the 1970s when many hotels had big rooms with a wall of sliding windows opening on to a patio/balcony. This was surely when chain hotels were at their best, before they became boringly eco-conscious, banned balconies and opening windows, and gave us cells instead. And why is it very new? Because until recently it was the Centra Hotel, but the owners won the Holiday Inn franchise and have spent a fortune doing everything up, from the carpets to the lighting.

There are long two-storey wings of bedrooms attached to a central public area, all rooms witha balcony or patio, looking out either on to the mature trees and shrubs around the car park, or into the large central area with a pool, large patio and gardens.

There's more than enough parking and a frequent shuttle bus to the airport, 4km away. The restaurant and bar were both excellent when I stayed there, and the staff extremely friendly. Although it's in a suburban area, the hotel was quiet overnight, though it's possible that some rooms have some traffic noise.

So this is not your usual airport Holiday Inn a la LAX or LHR. It's a quiet resort-feel hotel in its own extensive grounds, the sort of hotel where life flows naturally from the interior into the sunshine outside.

The hotel itself was fine - modern, spacious room. But it was located a bit far (5km) from the airport, from which you need to travel by a shuttle bus (NZD10 return), assuming you don't have your own transport. Didn't see much of the facilities as we were just there for 24 hours and spent most of the day in the city (hotel-arranged taxis can get you there for NZD30). The swimming pool looked like it could do with a facelift though. My main complaint would be that the shuttle bus only runs from 4am, while regular airport buses from the city centre (45-minute journey) are around the clock. Had I known this in advance, I'd have just stayed in the centre, where the range of accommodation options is obviously wider.

This was our second stay at this Hotel and it has even improved since the Holiday Inn took over (The Centra previously)
We use this Hotel for its location as it is so convenient for the airport. I must say despite its location there is hardly any aircraft noise at all.
It is a lovely hotel in pleasant garden surroundings that also has a swimming pool, lovely for a relaxing swim.
The grounds themselves are well kept and looked liked still to be improved upon.
There is a Restaurant on site which offers very good standard of food from a Buffet option to Al a Carte menu which has plenty to offer and reasonably priced and saves you having to go out..
The breakfast is also buffet style but has a wide selection of both hot and cold food.
What we liked was that the hot food was “hot” not like some buffets that offer luke warm food. The staff in the restaurant were very pleasant and efficient. Thank you Jane and Victoria for making our evening so enjoyable.
Other hotel staff were plentiful and polite.
The Bedrooms are spacious well equipped which includes, wall mounted flat screen TV. mini bar, safe, Tea/coffee making facilities, wardrobe and drawers, iron and ironing board. Hairdryer, Telephone, Internet connection available at a charge. Lovely added touch was the Bathrobes and the sumptuous pillows.
I would most certainly recommend this Hotel for a short or long stay.

Its not in a very picturesque area but its fine for an overnight airport stop. Fairly spacious room and and quite well appointed. There are nearby shops and restaurants and its a fairly short taxi ride to either the airport or the train station at Middlemore - much cheaper than a taxi ride from Auckland station if you are arriving from the Overlander like we were. Typical so-so Holiday Inn breakfast buffet, not really to my taste but OK.

I stayed a night after a week touring the North island. The Holiday Inn is a short distance from the Internation airport. There is a handy shuttle from the terminal to the hotel for a small fee.

The hotel is quite comfortable and the room I had on the second floor looked fresh and clean. The modern looking decor as quite pleasant and there was even a nice complimentary cheese plater along with a box of fine chocolates and a bottle of wine. Most impressive.

The bathroom was fine, clean and towels plentiful. There was not much to fault for a single night stay.

As I had an early flight back to Sydney the next morning, I found the automated phone wake-up call quite handy. Set and forget.

Given the quality of the room and hotel for the price paid, the close location to the terminals and the shuttle service, this is quite a decent hotel for an overnighter. I have no hesitation in staying here again for future trips.

We chose this hotel for a brief stay after a late night flight into Auckland.

It was a little difficult to find (though a very close drive from the Airport).
Our own Sat Nav and that in the hire car struggled to find it based on the address on the booking sheet.
It was located after a little late night drive (lol) and another Sat Nav search. It was found under Centra Airport Hotel - Mangere (I think this may be the former name).

Check in was very easy and parking was readily available.

The room was very comfortable and nicely decked out.
Most importantly the pillows, bed and quilt very very cosy.
Additionally great to see curtains that adequately darken the room when the sun is up :)

It was a brief stay for us but I would def recommend this one!

We had an early morning flight from Auckland so needed to be close to the airport. Being 4kms away from the airport this hotel fitted the bill. This hotel exceeded my expectations having read some of the tripadvisor reviews.

Receptionist was helpful and efficient but didn't smile once! Hotel seemed quite busy. It is quite a sprawling hotel low level hotel. The carpet in the public areas seemed quite worn and tatty.

Room was clean with modern furnishings including flat screen tv. Looked like the carpet in the room was quite new. Bathroom was clean and functional. Nice wide bath and powerful shower overhead. Lots of toiletries. The bed was very comfy, room was very quiet and we slept well.

There didn't seem to be anywhere else in the local vicinity to eat and although the restaurant totally lacked atmosphere (felt very canteen-like) the dining experience was much better than expected. Managed to get a booth seat and despite my reluctance to eat buffets we chose the buffet option as it looked so good. All the hot food was hot (and not luke warm) with plenty of choice and the staff were great. Really enjoyed it. The bar had a bit more atmosphere than the "canteen" area.

Check-out was quick an easy and the shuttle bus arrived straight away. Shuttle was $10 return per person which I thought was a bit expensive seeing as it specifically services this hotel and the one opposite.

This hotel is perfect for an airport stopover.
