“You pay a room but you get a flat!”
Reviewed September 19, 2013

We stayed two nights in Annesley House at the beginning of July although the plan was to leave the first night, and this is the first proof of our satisfaction. We are a family of 5 and we were offered Dr. Brewer rooms. We obtained a full well furnished flat, at the price of a motel room in other towns on the Great Ocean Road. After some days always on the road, we had the time to feel home for a while, with plenty of space for every one (the flat has place for 8 people to sleep, if it were not for the bathroom which could prove insufficient for so many persons), and we took advantage of the kitchen for a real self-cooked meal. The owner will help you in taking advantage of attractions in the surroundings. In that sense Portland was a nice surprise, with plenty of things to see and practice, maybe less famous but really pleasant. We had for example an unforgettable full immersion in nature at cape Bridgewater, where you have white sands and black cliffs, a long walk between the sea and fields. We could see most wildlife species: not only kangaroos and wallabies, but also whales and seals. Don’t miss it!

Room Tip: Some rooms have direct access to a small private garden. Dr. Brewer has not, but you can take advant...

A very nice stay - lovely room and great hospitality! We just walked in off the street and were lucky to get the last room. Good location too so made the perfect stop over. The late checkout was also much appreciated as was the Port which went down very nicely indeed.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Rosalie room which was lovely but from what we saw all the rooms look nice.

Stayed in the Wademore room .We were disappointed with the the room and the soft furnishings and felt they cheapened they decor. It appeared tacky too us in comparison to other heritage stays. The bed was way to firm ..perhaps a thick mattress topper would do the trick and the furniture albeit old was rickety .The Tv to small to view from the bed and the bathroom a somewhat distasteful addition. We were acused of smoking in the room after cooking toast and doing the owner the favor of opening windows .
The street noise bothered us WITH WINDOWS CLOSED. We felt other rooms are much more tasteful.
Would have liked breakfast included in the price without asking to order prior .Simple continental would do.
Rooms have good heating and are clean and hygienic.
I have deleted my previous review and revised as it angered management with accusations of maliciousness .Not all reviews will please.
I wanted to leave and ask for a refund but my partner wanted to keep the peace so we stayed.
Linen and towels were thick and new but the bath supplies not of the quality expected.
Tea ,coffee selection and biscuits offered .
We have stayed in several places in Portland and surrounds but this we wont return to Annesley
A quaint overnighter in the Wademore room but thats all.

.

Room Tip: Not a honeymoon suite not enough luxury....this room has street noise

A lot of what you say about this room is not true, I believe other reviews of this room support this view.

We stayed in the Wadmore Room, and this was the first time we've stayed in an 'older style' hotel. Not knowing what to expect, we were quite happy with our experience.
Pros: We loved the spa, and the bed was huge. If you like a firm bed, you'll love this one. Fantastic heating. Location so close to everything- park the car (off street parking!) and walk.
Host Mark was friendly and quiet. If you need anything, just ask him. Linen spotlessly clean- however the robes are well loved..!
Cons: Atmosphere seemed confused between hotel & B&B- needed something like a communal place to eat an old style breakfast. Being a honeymoon suite, maybe the romance factor could be improved- flowers, body oils, chocolates.
We booked through a website & got a discounted price, so overall we're happy and give a 4/5.
If you want breakfast, let Mark know by 3pm- he's hooked up with a beaut local gallery/cafe & for a reasonable price they'll provide a delicious feed.

Thank you so much,

1) Will retire robes
2) Yes we are a hybrid between a B&B and serviced apartments; this is both strength and a weakness. Strength being it allows us to offer something unique. Weakness is people can be confused as to expect.
3) We do more on the honeymoon theme if requested.

We really enjoyed our stay at Annesley. Booking through the website was easy and the response quick. Our room, the Baytree suite was spacious with a lot of character and all the modern conveniences that you need. Thoughtfull touches are included like cookies, port and arrangements with a local cafe for dinner and breakfast. A substantial continental breakfast was available for an additional cost. Our host Mark was friendly without being intrusive and told us that there were whales at Cape Bridgewater. The house has been beautifully restored with comfortable furniture and tastefully furnishings. It's central location is a bonus. Would definitely stay there again.

We stayed in the Housekeeper's quarters for two nights. The rooms were tastefully appointed, cosy and warm, and the standard of cleanliness was excellent. Travelling with children, we particularly appreciated the little touches that made the rooms inviting for kids; a box of blocks, books on the bookshelf and strawberries in the fridge. Mark was a wonderful host and friendly dog Sid such a delight. We will definitely stay again next time we are in Portland.
