“History, comfort and style”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 17, 2012

Annesley House is a perfect combination of history, comfort and style. The building has been lovingly and tastefully restored into a unique accommodation experience that is incredibly good value. There are 6 apartments - each different, but each with very comfortable fittings and everything you'd need. Upstairs rooms have views, downstairs are larger. We had a look at them all and would have been happy in any. The attention to detail and amazing furnishings are a real treat and there is plenty of info about the history of the place if you are interested.

The location is just around the corner from the main shopping area and a short stroll to the waterfront area. It is not on a main road so was very quiet at night.

Host Mark warmly welcomed us with port and strawberries and managed to be there when you needed him while allowing us plenty of privacy. We stayed three nights and didn't want to leave.

Absolutely a top choice - Annesley House deserves its high ratings and stands out among a humdrum crowd. Highly recommended and I don't say that often.

Had a very good experience staying in this hotel. I called to inform that I will be arriving a lot earlier and Mark the owner told us it's ok. He asked if we liked port, he just got from Barossa valley. So he gave us lots with fresh strawberries and balsamic vinegar in our room. The apartments are very spacious. Tastefully decorated with Victorian themed fittings and furniture. Very highly recommended. PS. If you are a dog lover, Sid the sausage dog will give you a warm welcome too.

We stayed at Annesley House for only one night - and immediately regretted not having more time to spend there. The room was amazing - hot tub included in the bed room - four-poster-bed, etc. The friendly manager greeted us with some fresh strawberries and maple syrup in the fridge - no better way to make someone feel welcome! We slept peacefully and didn't hear any noise from other guests, although there were a couple of kids staying there as well. Will definetely come back next time we are in Portland!!

My partner and I had been flying into Portland every week from Melbourne for work (until September this year). We needed to find accommodation for 2 nights a week and the barmaid at the Gordon Hotel gave us a pamphlet about Annesley House which is well situated within walking distance to everything in town.

As soon as we arrived we were struck by the beauty of the outside of the building and when we stepped in, we were pleasantly surprised by the beauty of the Grande meeting room (where you can sit and read or have a drink). Mark the owner was friendly and showed us around, but the thing that really "sealed the deal" on that first night was meeting Sid the long haired, miniature Dachshund. After the initial barking and checking us out, he decided we could stay !! We are now referred to as "Sid's friends."

Over the 13 months that we have worked in Portland, we have stayed in all 6 rooms at Annesley. They are all furnished in a way to suit the style and age of the building with modern conveniences thrown in as well such as free WiFi internet service, comfortable beds, electric blankets, heating & cooling in each room as well as flat screen TV's, DVD players and an interesting selection of books for your entertainment. The rooms are all different and charming in their own ways.

Mark knows a lot about Portland and is always willing to tell you about the area and Sid is always up for a walk or to pose for anyone who wants to take his photo (he posed with some kids recently and it was one of the cutest things I have ever seen).

If you want to stay at a charming place for a great nightly rate (and have a cute little dog thrown in for good measure), then we can't recommend Annesley house highly enough.

Marie & David.

Room Tip: For families, Dr. Brewers or Housekeepers downstairs are ideal (Housekeepers opens up to the lovely...

We stayed in Dr. Brewers rooms which was perfect for a family of 4 but could we have slept another 4 people. Two bedrooms had a double bed with a single bunk and the other room had a double. The kitchen and bathroom facilities were outstanding. Well situated in Portland just a few minutes stroll to cafes and the town centre. Off road parking for guests at the rear.

A nice old building, sanded and polished to a fine finish. Four poster bed, wooden floors with character flaws, like old fashioned doors and locks made this a comfortable place to stay.

Room Tip: Get the heating turned on in winter early, otherwise great.

Arriving in Portland after a 5 hour drive from Apollo Bay, we were at first a bit disappointed by the town, but needed to find somewhere to stay. Tripadvisor led us to Annesley House, a great find! We booked the Honeymoon suite to have a treat and were not disappointed. The owner showed us the room, which is a little unconventional, being styled to an old Victorian consulting room. We were offered an alternative but chose to stay in that room as an 'experience'.

I truly apologise to the people of Portland for my initial impressions, we had an amazing dinner and a great night at Annersley House; great memories from just one night!

Hugely helpful and friendly staff and amazing setting. Highly recommend!
