We spent 2 nights in Wadmore honeymoon suite in Nov 2011 and it was a perfect weekend away from the big city and everyday life. The room is spacious, clean and very comfortable. The town itself is quite interesting, having some nice restaurants and cafes and spectacular coastal walking trails which we love to visit.
Portland is quite far from the most popular tourist paths so there no big crowd in the town and on the walking tracks.

The only problem was that the weekend was far too short.

I found Baytree apartment at Annesley House was an ideal place for a person on their own who just wanted to shut the world out for a few days and 'recharge the batteries', but it would be equally as suitable for a couple (double bed) who wanted to take in the sights of Portland. I liked the sense of security of being in a house where the owners lived on the premises. The local supermarkets have ample provisions to cook a gourmet treat, or purchase some high quality prepared meals, or there are restaurants within walking distance. If the oven doesn't work call the owner. There is an over-riding switch somewhere that needs to be turned on.
One can sit on the leather couch, or laze in bed to watch televsion. There is a small table and chairs for dining, also providing a place to set up your computer with free internet connection provided. The small sunroom with the daybed was a delightful place to laze with a good book, although even on a sunny winter day it got too hot after awhile. This room doesn't have curtains or blinds so I don't consider it suitable to use as sleeping quarters. The Claw foot bath was lovely to lie back in and soak in a bubble bath but rather slippery for showering in because the base is curved. Lying in the bath it is easy to let your mind wander back to reflect on the former life of this room as part of the doctors surgery from 1878. Baytree is a winter room. I think it would feel pleasant even on a dreary day but I suspect it would be uncomfortably hot in the summer, however Annesley House has a good selection of other attractive rooms at the front of the house that would be an ideal summer option.

Room Tip: In summer ask for a room at the front of the house. In winter ask for Baytree

Thank you for your kind comments,

We have fitted a non slip matt to the bath so should be less slippery when showing

Having arrived in Portland early evening on our trip down The Great Ocean Road, expecting to find an abundance of hotels/motels, B & B's, all of which were full! We were directed to the 'house on the hill' to be met by a charming man and his long haired daschund. We were offered the 'Wadmore' room and our travelling companions the 'Baytree'. Comprehensively furnished and sympathetically renovated. Very relaxed and informal we enjoyed a good nights rest suitably refreshed for the next leg of our epic journey across Australia.

As already described by previous reviews the room was clean, spacious and well equipped. We stayed only one night in the bayview room (main room with a comfortable bed and couch, bathroom with bathtub and an extra small room) and enjoyed the place.

Valid point;
We have now placed hotel style door hangers, so guests can now request their apartment be serviced or clean towels in between regular servicing.
Sorry for the oversight

The owners of this property have lovingly restored it, so that it offers a variety of charming character holiday apartments.
The restoration is in keeping with the period of the property, which gives it its charm. We stayed in the Captain's Quarters which is a 3 room apartment, with kitchen facilities (microwave, gas range, kettle, toaster and fridge/freezer). It had a fairly cozy feel, being much more homely than the average motel, or hotel chain.
One word of warning. The apartments are marketed a being fully serviced. They are not. There is no daily housekeeping, so beds do not get made up, towels are not changed, bins are not emptied and the complementary coffee and tea bags are not refilled
We think it would be more appropriate if the apartments were marketed as "period self catering holiday apartments". We stayed 4 nights and were disappointed that these services were not available. We would only recommend a 1-2 night stay because of this.
We are quite tall, so the period bed did mean we could not stretch out full length, making it a little uncomfortable.

Period style restored property made an interesting change from the usual. Claw footed period bath tub with shower above looked very appealing. Good to use as a bath, but not really suitable as a shower & quite slippery.

Internet access seemed sporadic. WiFi is free, but sometimes it worked & sometimes it didn't.

Enjoyed the stay, but was happy not to be staying a second night.

A beautifully restored historic home in an excellent location in the middle of the town, and close to attractions such as Mary McKillops schoolhouse and waterfront, restaurants etc. We stayed upstairs in the beautiful Baytree suite - with original clawfoot bath, comfy leather lounge, modern kitchenette, TV/DVD and internet etc. Lovely garden and easy parking. Spent an interesting hour discussing history of the local area with the very knowledgeable owner. A great way to end our Great Ocean Road odyssey - and then head off to Ballarat. It's also quite close to the SA border so would be a good place to spend a night or two on the way to Adelaide. The area has much to recommend it.
