Owner description: The Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden was established in 1993 to research, conserve and promote the wider appreciation of Australia’s arid zone flora. Located on the shores of Upper Spencer Gulf with spectacular views to the ancient Flinders Ranges, the Garden showcases a diverse collection of arid zone habitats in a picturesque setting of more than 250 hectares. As well as its stunning selection of arid zone plants, the garden is also home to more than 100 species of birds, and has a diverse population of repltiles, mammals and insects. It features a children's animal discovery trail, AridSmart display gardens where you can see how to use the plants in you home garden, and a visitor centre, which incorporates the Bluebush Cafe and the AridSmart Gift and Garden Shop. The cafe has mouthwatering menu choices and you can't go past the Quandong Smoothies. The AridSmart Gift and Garden Shop is where you can purchase a piece of the garden to take home. Its range of AridSmart plants will not only reduce your water bills but will bring the beauty of Australia's plants into your garden.

“Interesting and very well done”

The range of plants on display is great - covering a large number of Australia's arid areas. Everything was well maintained and laid out and labelling of plants was excellent. The cafe facilities was just right as well.

“Been there before in the rain, this time sunshine”
Reviewed August 10, 2014

Great place to visit if you are interested in plants and flowers. If you want to have a look at all the gardens suggest at least 2 hours. Great value as it is free.

“Put it on the 'to-do' list”
Reviewed July 27, 2014

On day # 1 at the Arid Lands Botanic Gardens, we arrived mid-afternoon and it was stinking hot. After three minutes out of the car we beat a hasty retreat to the cool of a bar in town. The next morning was much more conducive to exploration, far cooler and there was even a bit of drizzle. Despite the damp, we really enjoyed rambling through the gardens. It was fairly easy to get off the track but we weren't the slightest concerned. The array of unfamiliar (to our eyes) but dutifully labelled arid-zone plants was just great, and the abundant birdlife a delightful bonus, from the chirpy zebra finches to a very proud-looking brown goshawk surveying his estate. The park centre/shop is worth a visit too, with nice souvenirs and more than passable coffee and cakes.

“Fantastic garden”
Reviewed July 16, 2014

We took the 10 am tour with an extremely knowledgeable guide. He made the different plants come alive with stories about their uses and history. I believe that 10 am is the only tour so try to get there for it or check before you go as to times it may be offered. If you can't make the tour, the garden contains many good descriptive signs about the plants. Even in the heart of winter the flowers were blooming on many of the plants. The garden cafe was excellent also. Try the quandong ice cream---fabulous! If you are a bird watcher, bring your binoculars. The garden is full of birds. The visitor center has a well illustrated guide to the birds you will see in the garden.
