“Quick Stop for Fraser Island”
Reviewed April 13, 2012

We stayed in a private double with a shared bath and were surprised by a few things at this hostel. Our room was quite small and opens to the outdoors. The bed was the bottom half of a bunk with the frame still attached, and the walls were simple brick. The curtains looked to be from 1960. The room looked as though it hadn't been cleaned in a while as there were cobwebs in many of the corners, and a big fat cockroach fell out when we closed the curtains. The bed and sheets were clean however.

Pros - Good lounge and pool area with a restaurant/bar.
- Bathrooms were clean and well maintained.
- The hostel is in a big lot with lots of trees, it makes for a nice walk around and a pleasant atmosphere to be in.
- They offered a pick-up and drop-off service from the bus station.
- Quiet at night!
- Helpful staff at the front desk

Cons - Dated, dusty rooms.
- Kitchen needed to be cleaned and maintained better. (dirty floors, old food, single picnic table inside to eat on)
- There was no ventilation in the kitchen, so it was always twice as hot as outside.
- Expensive wifi
- Long walk to the nearest grocery store, or anything. It's in a residential area and walking to a mall, or "downtown" is impossible.

Hervey Bay was just a stop for Fraser Island for us, and we're glad that was it. If we came back we would look for somewhere else, but might stay here again.

I found the place a little strange to be honest, I think it's because it's not like a normal youth hostel. Hervey Bay is also a strange place.

Anyway the hostel staff were excellent - so helpful and friendly, and honest. When I stayed (Jan 2012), there was a shuttle car which picked me up from the coach terminal, and it also runs so many times a day so when you leave you can just be driven back to the main coach terminal/some shops, which is great because the hostel is about a 20 minute drive. That service is free.

I stayed in a 7 bed (I think) dorm, which only had me rattling around in it so it felt a little strange. The dorm did need a good clean in some ways - there were some terrifyingly thick spiderwebs at the higher windows and picture frames but the place seemed quite clean/hygienic so perhaps just needed a thorough spring clean. I agree that it didn't seem overly secure, however I didn't feel unsafe, just would have preferred more sturdy doors/locks and better curtains.

I remember the luggage storage being fairly expensive and some of the pathways weren't overly great for anything on wheels (such as my case, I know a lot of travellers would have rucksacks though). There is a payphone on site and a lounge/bar area as well as a small pool.

Most people use this place as a stopover en route to Fraser Island I gathered, and it was very quiet when I was there with very limited things to do at night. Unfortunately not within quick walking distance to a lot of places, however this tends to be the case for Hervey Bay as it's spread out and doesn't have a real centre.

Loved this place; they knew exactly what we wanted & needed before we did. The receptionist was really friendly & spotted an error in a tour we booked with times & got on the phone straight away & fixed everything without us saying a word except thank you. Food was delicious, fairly priced & excellent quality, & I loved the big comfy chairs in the shared area.. The room was comfortable & I would have really liked to have stayed there & chilled out for a few days longer than what we did stay. Actually just about all the staff we encountered there were really friendly. Keep up the good work :)

The town doesn't have so much to offer, but with the way the hostel is set up there is no need to venture out. It is the perfect place to spend a few days and sort everything out before going on to travel again. Gorgeous atmosphere and relaxed setting. Definitely recommend it!

We stayed in a double room. Initially seemed like great value for money however we wouldn't stay here again. Receptionist was very efficient & very friendly - that was the highlight of our stay. Room issues:
-We could lock the fly screen but the sliding glass door could not be closed all the way, did not feel very secure
- curtains were see-through and way too small, everyone outside could see very clearly into our room, ie no privacy whatsoever
- walls were paper thin
- sign in the room stated any alcohol found in room would be confiscated, not told about this at reception before booking in
- kitchen area was unclean and uninviting
- they had a separate communal area that was also a bar and served food which was more appealing, however beers were expensive for a YHA

One of the best YHA's I have visited!

We stayed on the campsite, it was nice and shaded. Loads of wild birds in the trees.

The facilities were clean and in good order, the bar was particularly good. They even provided cheap food (great when backpacking!)

We used reception to book several trips (Lady Elliot Island and horse riding) they were enthusiastic and very helpful!

It is a little way out of town but still a managable walk. They also have very cheap bike hire (a great way to get to and from town and the beach).

Really good value, good facilities too plus a busy bar with food available if required.

Kitchen was ok, with all the equipment you would need plus nice environment for those camping albeit was a bit of a walk to the toilets and little in the way of lights at night. still, for those like us with a basic camper and on a budget, was ideal.

Only thing I would say was there was a lot of pressure to book organised trips for Fraser Island, in particular, we were repeatedly told that it would be dangerous to self drive, on a super tight budge, we ended up chancing it but had no problems at all in the end. Was a lot cheaper and we loved being independent from the busy group tours and camping on the beach.
