Characterful old building on the seafront with good views over the bay. The food was exceptionally good. my wife had a beatifully cooked steak while I had the local fish dish ,very very good, the deserts were equally as scrumptious. So good food good service at a resonable price

We often eat here when visiting Kaikoura because of the consistently fresh seasonal food and quality service. The chef's flare for food display and flavours is always inspiring. The restaurant's decor is warm and inviting and caters to both large and small parties. Views of the sea and mountains are breathtaking in both winter and summer.

The room could do with a bit of a style update, but its lofty ceilings and generous size, coupled with the many double hung sash windows providing a view of the beach and ocean across the street, make this a good spot to dine and gaze. The building used to be bank in the 1800s and the large walk in safe is now the working bar area - massive door still intact. We both had the lamb rump, served medium rare and as tender as could be. Served atop a melange of earthy beetroot and golden sweet potato cubes, cherry tomatoes, broad beans and scattered throughout with feta cheese all in an orange scented jus. Delicious. And leaving enough room for dessert. I had the blackberry & pear bakewell tart (with the obligatory cream and ice cream, of course) and my dining companion had the creme brulee, served with a berry compote and some gorgeous hazelnut and orange biscotti crisps. The coffee is very good here. The wine list is small but perfectly formed, with some great NZ wines on offer at reasonable restaurant prices and a good number available by the glass. Service is a lovely balance of small town friendly and professionalism. The White Morph is a great find in a small tourist town. The owners have recently opened a restaurant in Nelson (Fords Restaurant & Bar), which we also visited and reviewed when in Nelson a few days ago. Both are highly recommended if you're nearby!

Coming to this restaurent was one of the reasons to visit KK. We've been several times before and always enjoyed it but felt that this last time left a little to be desired. The service is still good and the setting unchanged in it's splendour. The food itself, though, wasn't quite as up to standard as it had been in the past and that was a disappointment. After all, if you can't get the best crayfish here, where can you?
